Absolutely horrific event. There's a video somewhere on youtube and it isn't for the faint-hearted that covers from the moment that the fire starts onwards. The flames engulf the stands in literally 4/5 minutes. It's clear that few knew the full extent of its seriousness, but there lots of absolute heroes that risk their own lives by going back and dragging people out as well.
And to think that Heysel happened less than 20 days later. These events simply should never have been allowed to happen and we should all be thankful for the conditions we've now become accustomed to in modern stadiums.
