i have a version of this on my old XBox, but it seems as though you can only get it for operating systems only now. does it play mkv's?

oh well. thank god i have a ps3.
did you know that 10 x 2 and 11 x 2 have the same answer?

Anyone know of an easy beginners guide to this program? How to setup metadata, folder structure etc? All that was a piece of piss on Windows Media Center but is being a pain in the arse on XBMC. I've had a look on their forums but they seem to take it for granted that you're already familiar with everything.

I've been usinfg this fora few months now it's good also got a really good remote control app on my HTC desire.

I am not an expert so can't offer any major advice, but as folder structure goes, if you create a TV Shows and Movies folder within your public videos folder it will automatically pick them up when you select tv shows menu or movies!.
Each TV show needs a folder of it's own then under that a folder for each season

eg. TV Shows>Sopranos>Season 1>

Same for movies and music. If you choose to kepp you files outside the public folders you will have to add them manually from the add source option.

Hope that helps.

One thing I found the other day is that you don't have to unzipvideo files for it to play them either it will play them directly from the zipped archive, which saves some hassle.

You can also turn on hardware graphics acceleration so your graphics does all the hardwork encoding the video, this is the main reason I started using it so I didn't need to update my media centre which only has a Pentium 4 processor and couldn't handle 1080 MKV files.

If your looking for a beginners guide for using it try the wiki pages rather than the forum if I remeber rightly I think there was a beginners guide on there.  I found once I sussed the file structure out everything kinda dropped into place by just trying stuff out.

If anyone has any questions I'll do my best to help but I am no expert :wave

Just found out that there is a liveonlinefooty plugin for xbmc, which enables you to watch all channels! Obviously you need a valid subscription, but if you have a media pc, then this is a gods send.

Also, I've been using the Aeon Nox skin, which is a massive improvement over the default skin/theme.

Anyone else using xbmc? If so what add-ons have you got?

got it running on a JB'd iPad2, and it works fine, although the navigation can be a bit clunky with no keys... worth it for the liveonlinefooty plug in though, as then you're not restricted to the iPhone streams

Need to find a way to install this to my TV, my TV has DRM so it only pics up phots and music from a USB plugged in. After that i should be able to hook it up via freenas and i can stream all my media perfectly.

Love the fact you can have it download torrents automatically for set shows and it will put them in the correct folders and rename them so they don't have weird names. Home automation is the next step!

Quite like the ESPN plugin too although its the american ESPN 3. Some good plugins on the XBMC forums.

Got it all sorted. Dead easy to do.

Must say XBMC is one hell of a app. Got Icefilms and LiveFootyObline plugins, both brilliant. Sadly the experience is let down by the fact the Apple TV cannot play 1080p and also the fact the USB port is not a host so you cant hook up external drive to it. You have to stream videos over network. Bit of a bummer really.

If you've got NitoTV installed, you can do the following to enable your USB.

Binned the Apple TV 2 as it was just too slow and juddery when trying to play 1080p MKV's

Just invested in a the following set up!

Shuttle XS35GT
4gb Ram
30gb Solid State Drive
Internal SLim Blu-Ray drive
Emprex Media remote
Ubuntu installed
XBMC installed

Fils stream over the network via a 2TB NAS.

Most say, its bloody impressive XBMC. IceFilms is an epic plugin.

Been using XBMC for about 2 weeks now, and it's brilliant. Got the LOF and Icefilms plugins, iPlayer, TVCatchup, and another plugin for TV and films that I can't remember the name of. All hooked up through a Media Centre PC to my big fuck off telly. The LOF streams seem to have improved since I started using this as well, but that may be a coincidence.

Running 1080p MKVs on my new setup, CPU is running at 8% as the ION2 GPU is doing all the work.

I have following plugins installed.

IceFilms - Amazing plugin, even better if you have a MegaUpload account. THink of it as a free unlimited use Love Film.
LOF - The SKY HD streams are a thing of beauty, as are the 3pm kicks offs on Saturdays.
FlashSportsStreams - As LOF but more expensive per month. Shows major UK, US and AUS sports channels 24/7 too. Shows UFC and boxing etc.....

Gutted to discover Boxee aren't continuing to develop the software only version of their application only to concentrate on the hardware embedded devices.

Anyone used the airplay feature on the new version of xbmc that has just been released?

Having dicked around on Navi-X last night I would highly recommend it, it really does have EVERYTHING on it! All your tv shows, old tv shows, pretty much every film ever, all your live sky tv streams, live foreign tv streams, live US Tv streams, etc... I really could go on!

As an example in the past 24 hours I've watched all sorts, from Danger Mouse and Count Duckula to Monty Python and the Mighty Boosh.

I assume that things like Sky Sports are a bit more stuttery as more will be watching that?

The picture quality was at least as good as liveonlinefooty last night but it was very stuttery.

An old thread but wanted a bit of advice.  Looking at updating / refreshing my XBMC and was wondering what skins / etc. people were using at the moment?

Also, I haven't 'updated' XBMC since I installed it about 20 months ago - are there regular updates that I need to be doing??

I can highly recommend a repo called Mash Up. I hardly venture into NaviX these days as Mash Up is so good. It can either be installed via SHH or through Fusion via the ATV. Instructions can be found here: http://www.worldtvpc.com/mediaplayers/xbmc/xmbc-adding-mashupvideo.php. You can thank me later! ;D
