I don't know why, but I'm hoping more and more that England get absolutely twatted in every game they play and return as complete failures, so that they can't blame penalties, or Beckham or Rooney or whoever getting sent off, or the difference in climate blah blah blah.

I don't know when I became such a cynic regarding England, I was absolutely gutted when we went out of the last World Cup, and when we failed to qualify for Euro 08, but at the moment, I jsut can't see how I'm going to be able to muster a cheer for them when summer comes around, let alone express sadness at them failing miserably again.

I don't think England have any chance. Too many injuries at the back, a lack of competition in net and a fleet of underperforming/injured players. If by some miracle Capello can get this bunch to the semi-finals, he deserves the highest equivalent to a knighthood he can receive as a non-English national.

gotta disagree with you. if we have a terry/upson central pairing with johnson and ashley cole we have a fairly solid defence. anyone of barry, lampard, huddlestone or carrick can play central midfield and the attacking four of gerrard, rooney, lennon and whatever target man is going to hurt any defence. plus, the league has a bit of a break before the world cup proper, and an easy group stage to gather momentum before the knockouts.

thing is against brazil and spain we didnt have anywhere near a starting xi out - against neither of them did we have gerrard, lampard, ferdinand or lennon. full strength and imo, England can beat anyone. So I give them a shot.

Have already started daily prayers for a Spain vs. Argentina final.

I don't think it can happen.

I think this is a big problem with the format of the World Cup. Is there any reason why after the groups they cant just pair off winners and runners up and go random from there? It seems a real shame that it is so set already that certain finals are already ruled out.

Thoughts?

England have had far, far better squads in the past ten years and haven't won a thing, not even come close. Even with Capello in charge, who I think is the best manager England have had in a long, long time, it would be a miracle if they were to win the World Cup. There are just too many better teams out there at the minute, Spain and Brazil would destroy England, and teams like Holland, Argentina, and Germany I think would beat them as well.

We are missing a top class goalkeeper, our defence just isn't solid enough with too many individual errors made on a regular basis, we still have trouble accomodating Lampard and Gerrard in midfield, and our options up front are severely limited as we don't have a top class goalscorer.

Having looked at this again its actually not true, but Spain and Argentina can only meet in the final if one, not both of them go through 2nd place in their group, which looking at them, looks unlikely.

Just a guess but I reckon it would be fair to say most, if not all, the England team have played away from home before anyway. I reckon there more bothered about the getting caught bit, than the act itself.
