By far the shittiest WC for me. Brazil flopped, Holland bottled it, England shit as always, Argentina fluking their way through every stage and Italy were shit boring to watch, getting through thanks to their home support.

Mexico '86 and Spain '82 were legendary in comparison.
If he retires I'll eat my fucking cock.

- Perhaps a slightly less celebrated moment, but a beautiful goal by Yugoslav Dragan Stojkovic against Spain, whose first touch prior to slotting the ball home from a high, far post cross was possibly the best I've ever seen

You mean, the same Dragan Stojkovic that has managed to score from the bench couple of weeks ago ?

By the way, I agree with you on the goal against Spain:

It was the first tournement i can remember i was five. I can recall vididly my Dad jumping around our setting room as David O'Leary slooted home that penalty against Romania and wondering what the hell was going on. During that tournement i bought my first peace of music the Italia 90 fever hit "Give it a Lash Jack. Good times.

 <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/GxD0qAe2dUU" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/watch/v/GxD0qAe2dUU</a>

Fucken awful song  ;D

See I never remember Give it a Lash Jack as much as I remember Put em under Pressure.

Ooh ah Paul McGrath (changed the following year by Down fans to "Ooh ah Pete McGrath"!)
I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager.

I remember this tournament, can vaguely recall what happened. Not much interest in football back then, seriously couldn't understand the offside rule. Only Nessum Dorma made an impression, a classic. A perfect football anthem.

Was clearing out my room last night and found my old Italia 90 sticker album. Just brought back so many memories. I can remember that World Cup like it was yesterday. I'm not sure if it's the fact that I was so much younger then that makes it stand out more than recent World Cups have (and I do remember thinking it wasn't as good as Mexico '86 or Spain '82), but when you do think about everything that happened in that tournament, it really wasn't half bad was it? From the opening match onwards, there was drama, skill, excitement and unpredictability, although in Scotland's case I'll admit that the latter did not apply! Memories include:

- Those two Cameroon defenders being sent off for successive attempts to sever Argentina's Claudio Caniggia in half during their opening day 1-0 win over the World Champs - the second guy just about managed it!

- The spectacular goals of the previously (and subsequently!) unknown Italian striker 'Toto' Schillaci, who scored in every round of his side's involvement in the tournament

- The emergence of Paul Gascoigne, who (sadly) played the best football of his career in that tournament and was arguably the best player in it

- Jack Charlton's Republic of Ireland reaching the quarter-finals courtesy of David O'Leary's penalty shoot-out decider

- 38 year-old striker Roger Milla(er)'s goals for Cameroon and those dodgy celebrations afterwards

- Carlos Valderrama's hair

- Our first look at the young Italian Roberto Baggio, who scored the goal of the tournament when he ran half the length of the field, beat three men and scored against the Czechs

- That fantastic West German team, led by the awesome midfield presence of Lothar Matthaus

- Perhaps a slightly less celebrated moment, but a beautiful goal by Yugoslav Dragan Stojkovic against Spain, whose first touch prior to slotting the ball home from a high, far post cross was possibly the best I've ever seen

- Frank Rijkaard spitting at Rudi Voller, then pretending it was the other way around

- David Platt's last minute volley against Belgium

- Maradona having his penalty saved in the quarter-final shootout........then redeeming himself a few days later in a similar situation against the hosts to silence the home crowd in Naples.

- Cameroon giving England the fright of their lives

- That England-Germany semi-final epic, with Waddle hitting the bar from the half-way line, Lineker's great equaliser and Gazza's tears. Then of couse, Pearce and Waddle's infamous penalties.......

- Jurgen Klinsmann's outrageous dive in the final to get one of the Argentinians sent off

Some of these were definitely more memorable than others of course, and this will obviously depend a lot upon your nationality. But regardless of what happened on the field at Italia '90, it was unquestionably 'Nessun Dorma' that was the true star of the World Cup that year. A simply unforgettable piece performed by a man with an equally unforgettable voice.

Great times!

p.s. mods can you move this please into the general sport section?
the last truely great world cup  a mixture of old school and the new brand of football .  i would say in world cups i remember 1 italia 90, 2 spain 82 , 3 mexico 86, 4 argentina78 ,5 france 98 due to being off work at the time through out the tourney ,i would say my top 5 .,

Well 90 was my first and favourite, although given where I'm from if I'd been born a couple of years earlier 82 would have been...

And as for World Cup songs, while World in Motion is good, it doesn't hold a candle to this one:

If anyone has Sky+, the FIFA World Cup Official Film is on Sky Anytime until Monday reliving the glory of Italia '90.

I was watching it the other day and it brought some good memories.
We'll visit the Folies Bergeres,
They like to see the Scousers there,
The women are lovely with skin like a peach,
But no one can move it like Kenny Dalglish.

FIFA should really adopt Nessun Dorma as the Official World Cup song. It is perfect for the Tournament. I always think of the World Cup when I listen to it. It's intertwined forever, it captures the mood, the emotion, the pinnacle perfectly.

Maradona insulting the Italian fans while they were booing the Argentinian national anthem in the final against Germany.

The game Camerun England, a classic.

Camerun kicking the shit out of everything that moved in a blue and white shirt during the inaugural game against Argentina. Apparently Maradona had to play the next game with bigger boots because of the kicking he received.

The controversy over who the Napolitans would support in the semifinal between Italy and Maradona's Argentina.

How badly Argentina played and still managed to get to the final. The game Brasil Argentina was an example of that. Brazil attacked Argentina relentlessly, creating numerous chances that the posts, Goycoechea and bad finishing kept at bay. Eventually a rare flash of genius from Diego in that WC put Caniggia through and Argentina won 1-0.

Germany playing well, which of course, inexorably meant that they would win the thing. When they play badly they only reach the final.

The penalty shootout between Ireland and Romania.

I enjoyed Spain 1982 far more. Italy 1990 didn't have any truly atractive team, perhaps Holland but they didn't have a good tournement. Brazil was starting to play a much more functional "European" style by then. Argentina with Bilardo could never play atractive football and the great France of the eighties was finished.
England had probably one of the most talented midfields in their history. The game against Germany could have gone either way(of course before the penalty shoot out) ;D

World Cup 90
« Reply #104 on: June 8, 2020, 12:37:39 pm »
So World Cup 90 started exactly 30 years ago today. Personally I’m not really an international football fan but as an 8 year old just getting into the game, this tournament came at exactly the right time. All of the best players in the world coming together on one stage, most of the games being at times they could be watched, brilliant coverage of the tournament on both BBC and ITV and Pavarotti being the theme tune to the summer. Looking back now, I think it’s more the nostalgia and the childhood memories that make this such a memorable tournament for me. There weren’t many goals scored, stadiums were often only half full and a lot of the pre tournament stars didn’t really show up - Maradona, Careca and Gullit to name but 3. However this tournament will always be the World Cup I look back on the fondest. The Baggio goal against Czechoslovakia, Matthaus just dominating in every game he played, Voller/Rijkaard, Roger Miller, Gazza, Platt’s 120th minute winner, Valdarama, Cameron beating Argentina. There were enough sub plots to keep everyone interested. So what are other posters memories? Favourite game? Favourite player? Favourite moment? Fire away.

That Italy v Austria first game for the hosts, Italy absolutely battered them in first half, no luck.

Then on comes Schillaci in the 75th minute.... 78th minute..goal!!

... and he then has his own amazing journey in the tournament

Great world cup, my first too, and fondest.

A few other memories,  Lineker's penalties against Cameroon, Mathaus run and shot against Yugoslavia, Brehme curler against Holland. Claudio Cannigia getting physically assaulted by Cameroon. And Jurgen Klinsmann seemingly getting butchered in the final against Argentina, only to watch it 20 years later and see all those forward rolls were just play acting and he wasn't actually touched.

It was also a World Cup of great kits.  (West) Germany's is still an absolute classic, Italy's was just a beautifully simple kit that looked like it was made of silk. Even England's kit was really good with no flashes on the shoulders or stripes. And obviously Ireland's best ever kit too.

I loved it, the first World Cup I remember watching almost in full. I remember being amazed by some of the stadiums.  The Sampdoria/Genoa ground with those red tower things in the corners. All seemed so different from anything in England at the time.

Pearce, for some reason, smacking an indirect free kick against Netherlands into the back of the net, Van Breukelen diving for it and getting within about a mm of touching it and making it a legitimate goal.  The emergence of David Platt.

The Ireland v Romania penalty shoot out (I don’t remember any of the game)

Argentina being massive shithouses the whole way through (with the exception of being out shithoused by Cameroon in the first game).  Maradona handling the ball off the line against USSR, kicking Brazil off the pitch in the last 16 (and then much later Cannigia claiming they drugged the water the Brazil players were drinking on the field). The Italy - Argentina semi final in Naples where Argentina got about 3 or 4 players suspended for the final having picked up their 2nd bookings of the tournament. Then Giusti getting sent off in extra time for something that only the ref saw that wasn’t caught on camera, what actually happened remains a mystery to me this day.  Then all the crowding and bumping of the ref in the final.

Also seemed like there were a lot of red cards, at a time when being sent off carried a bit more of a stigma rather than something that just happens to everyone at some point.

Well before my time my first World Cup that I watched was 2002 which was probably the worst one of them all along with 2010. From the footage I have seen of this tournament though the games we're boring and dull when it comes to past World Cup's the one that I'm gutted that I was too young to remember or watch was France 98.

Yeah the format was strange and as Rafathegaffer said, there were only 7 goals in England’s group and three teams went through. I think it’s the format they are going with for the euros if they ever get played.

Probably still my favourite World Cup just for it being the first one I was totally obsessed with, and it was before I became disillusioned with the whole England thing. I can still probably say pretty much all the commentaries from the highlights of the England games, I watched them that many times. Some great players and some great kits too. The semi was one of the few times I saw my dad (almost) crying (he walked out and up the garden to have a little moment on his own).
Rafa Benitez: "I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager. Thank you so much once more and always remember: You'll never walk alone."

Yeah the format was strange and as Rafathegaffer said, there were only 7 goals in England’s group and three teams went through. I think it’s the format they are going with for the euros if they ever get played.

Same as the last Euros (24 in groups, 16 qualify).  Platini did a lot of terrible things as UEFA chief, but that's by far the worst of them.

First world cup in my lifetime i watched.

I remember rushing home from school to watch the Ireland/Romania game.

I remember being gutted how shite the Argentina Brazil match was, had such a build up and it was a borefest.

Best moment for me in the tournament though was those Cameroon players with the most extreme technical fouls on Claudio Caniggia, how he got up from that onslaught in that passage of play I'll never know. ;D

What a player Matthaus was in that tournament.

Roger Milla #Legend

I remember a power cut just after the 2nd half started in the England Germany semi final for about 15 minutes.

Yeah you’re right, I’d forgotten they’d already used it. I think the optimum number is 32 but they even want to surpass that now.
94 Corner to us. Last kick. Ali in the box and he’s scored

Yeah but as bad as the format was it did lead to one of those great Scotland getting eliminated in a cruel fashion moments.

They were clinging onto being the 4th ranked third place side and going through as long as South Korea got something against Uruguay. 90 minutes ticked over with 10 man South Korea holding on 0-0. Scotland were all but booking flights to Rome to play the hosts in the last 16. Then in the 91st minute the Uruguayan substitute nodded in a header and that was that.

Shame.  ;D
