I do remeber it well mate, used to play there with my mates and I've been chased by the cocky watchmen on the site and the gamekeepers on the Croxteth Hall estate, great days.
I have tride to put a very old photo of Melwood up but it is not accepted (File too large).
On the opposite side of Melwood Drive and Melwood itself, Deysbrook Lane, there used to be the married quarters for the army barracks (REME) which was situated on the corner of Deysbrook Lane and Princess Drive.
I lived just near the triangle by the junction of Deysbrook and Melwood. I'm not kidding, that triangle saw more football matches than Anfield.
Total bedlam.
Looking at in now it seems so tiny, but we'd sometimes have 15 or more of us kids playing there all day Sunday and in the evenings till it got dark, playing with one of those red plastic balls, like kicking a balloon, bought from Arnells for less than a shilling, but just one goal.
From Google maps it looks like the married quarters houses are still there, or the road is, but the playing fields and barracks have long gone. I do remember a gang of us walking round the back of the playing fields via the stream about 1965 and getting onto the golf course and searching for lost golf balls. I think we tried to sell some back to some golfer we saw but we got threatened so legged it quick.
Did you ever go and see the matches on the REME playing fields back in the early 60's?
Some of those were absolutely brutal, but great fun to watch.
