UFO alert: Sightings Update
« on: June 20, 2008, 07:32:26 pm »
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/afp/20080620/tod-britain-police-ufo-offbeat-6058bda.html

LONDON (AFP) - UFO enthusiasts got a boost Friday when Welsh police confirmed that one of their helicopter crews had spotted an "unusual aircraft" flying over Cardiff earlier this month. An investigation into the sighting had been launched, they said.

"South Wales Police can confirm its air support unit sighted an unusual aircraft. This was reported to the relevant authorities for their investigation," police said in a brief statement, avoiding the use of the term 'UFO', or unidentified flying object.

At the time of the incident, the helicopter with three men on board was waiting to land at the St Athan RAF base near Cardiff. The sighting reportedly took place at 00:40 am (23:40 GMT) on June 8.

South Wales Police denied there was a pursuit and indicated that the helicopter crew was never in any danger.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/skynews/20080625/tuk-ufo-sighting-security-probe-needed-45dbed5.html

By Sky News SkyNews - Wednesday, June 25 10:34 amA UFO expert says the latest reported sighting over a military base in Shropshire should be enough to prompt a formal inquiry into Britain's airspace security.

Nick Pope, who used to work for the Ministry of Defence's UFO project, has viewed recent footage filmed by a soldier at the Tern Hill barracks and said "it's all getting very interesting".

It follows a series of UFO sightings across Wales last week.

In one incident, a police helicopter was forced to swerve sharply as it was apparently 'buzzed' by a strange craft.

"This all started off with a near miss between an object and a police helicopter on June 8," Mr Pope said.

"Now it's transpired that at the same time there were other UFO sightings being reported around the country.

"This lends weight to the fact that there does seem to be something odd going on in our airspace."

Mr Pope said a formal inquiry should be launched by the MoD and the Civil Aviation Authority.

"All this clearly illustrate that there are flight safety issues," he said.

"I have seen three separate videos - all were interesting.

"The fact that this latest one was shot by military personnel shows the seriousness of this incident.

"The report from the soldiers will be on its way to Whitehall and the way forward now will be they (the MoD) should interviewing witnesses and examining civil and military radar."

He added that any hoax or mock-up by military personnel would be a disciplinary offence - and therefore less likely to happen.

"I've seen another video which showed a craft with a diameter of, I would estimate, several hundred metres, hanging silently over people's heads," he said.

"It was a clear breach of UK air security. So I think something is going on here."

A few weeks ago I was driving down the A1 north of Stevenage.... Between the trees to my right I noticed a strange shape... It was Black and triangular in shape, the trees made it hard to make out... I also noticed 2 policemen standing out of their car staring at it...

I convinsed myself that it was nothing, but over the next few weeks, doing the same journey I noticed lots of damage to corn fields... not asymetric shapes, but random 'blotches'...

Can anyone explain?

I just love the story of this sighting:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7489457.stm

Quote
Police called out to a 999 call about an unexplained object in the night sky solved the mystery straight away for their operator - "it's the Moon, over."
But the emergency call meant the officers were sent out to a house in the valleys area of south Wales.
They were told a "bright stationary object" was spotted above the unnamed caller's home.
A recording of the call has been released as part of a police campaign asking people to use 999 appropriately.
The Control Room conversation, which took place in May, was recorded - and below is a transcript:
Control Room: "South Wales Police, what's your emergency?"
Caller: "It's not really. I just need to inform you that across the mountain there's a bright stationary object."
Control room: "Right."
Caller: "If you've got a couple of minutes perhaps you could find out what it is? It's been there at least half an hour and it's still there."
Control: "It's been there for half an hour. Right. Is it actually on the mountain or in the sky?"
Caller: "It's in the air."
Control: "I will send someone up there now to check it out."
Caller: "OK."
The mystery was soon solved, as the exchange between control and an officer at the scene, makes clear.
Control: "Alpha Zulu 20, this object in the sky, did anyone have a look at it?"
Officer: "Yes, it's the moon. Over."
Control room staff also dealt with a stream of unsuitable calls on the 999 number during an "extremely busy period", said a spokesman.
Another caller rang asking for help when they wanted to vote for Rhydian on the TV programme X-Factor.
'Real emergencies'
Another wanted a pound for their supermarket trolley.
Following the calls, South Wales Police has changed the way it answers the phone.
Instead of saying "South Wales Police, how can I help?", control room staff now say "South Wales Police what is your emergency?"
Since the change, they have reported a 10% drop in 999 calls.
Superintendent Kevin O'Neill said: "There is no doubt in my mind that the public have taken on board the message we sent about making inappropriate 999 calls and thought twice about dialling the number in a non-emergency situation for which we are extremely grateful.
"Thanks to the public we have been able to answer calls, concerning real emergencies, quicker," said Supt O'Neill.
Between January and June 2008, the force answered 86.4% of calls within 10 seconds compared to 76.2% in the same period last year - an improvement of just over 10%.
The change in the greeting is being monitored by Cardiff University researchers Professor Martin Innes of the Universities Police Science Institute and Dr Frances Rock of the Centre for Language and Communication.
