Happy Mondays
« on: July 8, 2007, 04:16:57 pm »
Anyon else like the  mondays. they've always been one of me favourite bands.

Wrote for luck

Kinky Afro

Tart Tart

Olive Oil

top tunes. mad lads

Anyone got any stories?

Kinky Afro

You go spooky in a band

Son, Im 30
I only went with your mother cause shes dirty
And I dont have a decent bone in me
What you get is just what you see yeah
I should so I take it free yeah
And all the bad preserves be things that feed me
I never help or give to the needy
Come on and see me

Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify some brother today
And I dont dig what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice

I said dad youre a shabby
You run around and groove like a baggy
Youre only here just out of habit
All thats mine you might as well have it
You take 10p back and then stab it
Spray it on and tag it
So sack on me
I cant stand the needy
Get around here if youre asking youre feeling

Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify somebody today
And I dont dig what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice

So sack all the needy
I cant stand to leave it
You come around here and you put both your feet in

Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify somebody today
And I dont dig what you gotta say
So go on and say it

Yippee-ippee-ey-ey-ay-yey-yey
I had to crucify some brother today
And I dont hear what you gotta say
So come on and say it
Come on and tell me twice

Fuckin love the happy mondays man.

Theres the story of Bez and Shaun feeding pidgeons in Mancland. APparantly they used some bread laced with some chemical that made the  birds, literally explode in the air.

I went to see the Mondays supporting Oasis at the Reebok in about May 2000.
Me and me mate pushed right to the front so we could buzz of bezz dancin. Anyways, me mate manages to get enough space to make a spliff. I hold it for him while he puts the skunk and thagt in, pass it back to him and he starts rollin it. In the mean time, bez has decided that those at the front look a bit too hot, so he gets a bucket of water and lashes it all over everyone. I didnt even look ound, just heard from behind me  (in a very very loud scouse accent)
"AAAAAAawwwwww for fucks sake ye fuckin smackhead manc bastard" Shouldnt have laughed cos it was our last spliff, but me mate had the wettest droopiest most ruined spliff ive ever seen in his hands. Anyone else and i'd have been fumin, but bez is a legend so i let it slide.

W.F.L. , Kinky Afro and Step On - 3 tunes that are guaranteed to get me dancing. How on earth they managed to produce material like that with the amount they were shoving up their noses heaven only knows. Black Grape had it going on as well.

The pigeon thing they did before they were in the Mondays was pretty crazy from the Ryder boys.

Saw them live and they were without doubt the loudest thing I'd ever heard.

Saw them at the Leadmill in Sheffield last year. Shaun was just stood at the back doing very little. Bez had one arm in a pot, but was still gamely trying to freaky dance. Sound was Ok but no great shakes.

Rewind 13 years or so and saw Black Grape at the same venue. It was their 2nd ever gig as the Grape. There was so much energy in the crowd that night I thought there was going to be a riot. In the Name of the Father had you swaying back and forth, carried around by the crowd, like you used to on the old standing terraces.

A good band with a few good songs. The stories and persona out do the music which is no bad thing as far as they're concerned.

This is my favourite by them

Absolutely love the Mondays.

Saw them support Oasis in Bolton in 2000.  Me and me mate struggled for 45 mins to get near the stage, and then me mate kinda cowered behind me to build a spliff. Bex threw a bucket of water in the crowd to cool everyone down and destroyed out last joint the fucker. Then watched them in what was alllegedly at the time, their last ever gig. This was in Dublin in 2003. After the gig, we went to one of the local bars, and lo an behold, bex, shaun and the rest of the crew turned up. They ended up givin an impromptu performanc ein the pub that was even better than the original gig.

Alonso, why the fuck did you even bother going to see em with such blatant dislike for them?

The first album, Squirrel & G Man etc. is an absolute belter. Produced by John Cale of the Velvet Underground.

Bummed and Pills & Thrills are pretty good too. And the Rave On EP (kudos for ripping off Can on Hallelujah). I imagine they're shambolic, hit and miss live if the recordings I've heard are representative, but what do you expect from a bunch of druggies/ex-druggies/Mancs?

Saw them twice in the Libpool Uni Liver Bar. 1st time not long after Squirrel & G-Man came out- decent show punctuated by increasingly acrimonious exchanges between Ryder and keyboard player Paul Day ending up with Day picking his keyboard up off its stand and marching offstage mid-tune but taking the long way so he could welly Ryder up the arse as he went past.
2nd time was either just before or just after Bummed came out. Much busier, very hot, boss show, Central Station album artwork on projection, caned. Quality night.
Saw them a few times after that, Heaton Park and whatnot but that Bummed gig remains me fave. Believe they did The Picket with The Farm in the early days and they (and Ian Brown amongst others) showed up when Hooto and friends did the Hacienda. Halcyon days as they say!  :)

Their music holds up incredibly well in 2021 compared to a lot of bands from that era.

I've never really 'listened to them on purpose' but I've always thought the same when I've heard them on the radio during the last few years.
