« on: April 23, 2007, 06:49:11 pm »
Looking to take the misses away this weekend fancy hte lake district and Keswick was mentioned.

After somewhere to just potter about with a few local pubs rests etc and a bit worried Keswick is maybe a bit too big for that.

Been to Ambleside and loved that
Been to Kendal and hated that (cant beleive it has a KFC, McD etc!)

Anyone been to Keswick or can recommend anywhere else, ideally after somet a bit bigger than Ambleside and not as big as Kendal.....

Agree that Keswick sounds like what you're after. You might like to take a look at this place's website: http://www.derwentwater-hotel.co.uk

Thanks for that but dont really wanna be paying quite that much to be honest.

Just after a homely BnB close to the middle of the town for say £30 - £35 per person per night

Like i say just an impromptu couple a days away (aint even booked it off work yet) and after just buying a house and going away 4 times last year cheap and cheerful is the order of the day!

Keswick sounds about right for what you described. I find it a bit touristy but to be fair, if you're want to go to the lakes, it's gonna be touristy.
I was brought up in Cockermouth, right on the edge of the Lake District.

I can't really think of anywhere other than Keswick that meets the criteria you set out. Windermere, Bowness and Hawkshead are pretty small and full of posh south lakes c*nts. :wanker

Ambleside and Keswick are the major tourist towns and offer the best options for easy access to the countryside with plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants. There really isn't anywhere else of that size in the lakes. Penrith, Kendal, Cleator Moor and Egremont are all outside the lakes and pretty grim. Cockermouth is about the only other option, it's quite a nice town and not as toursity as Keswick but then it's a bit further from the Lakes.

As far as walking or mountain biking goes, you can't go wrong with Keswick as there's loads to do either walking out form the town or taking the car down Borrowdale or into the next valleys. There's also loads of variety from strenuous stuff like hiking up Skiddaw or Cat Bells to marked trails around Whinlatter and  Dodd Wood. Can't recommend it highly enough if that's your thing.

I haven't been to any of the pubs in Keswick for years so can't really recommend any but there's a few nice cafes and bars dotted around the town. Generally Jennings pubs do ok food (but don't quote me on that) and sell the local beer (brewed in Cockermouth - you can still do the brewery tour on weekdays I think).

Outside of Keswick, The Pheasant Inn on the side of Bassenthwaite used to do good grub (this was years ago mind) and if you want a really posh dinner there's Armathwaite Hall but I think you'd have to book. I can't think of anymore to say about Keswick off the top of my head but I'll try to answer any other questions you have.

Enjoy! :wave
If you're lying, I'll chop your head off.

Thanks alot for the Phi a massive help!!

Soundsz like a good choice then! cant get away from touristy as you say and being from York i know how muc it'll piss you off!!!

One thing that does baflfe me a bit is that when i was in Ambleside the restaurantes were really nice but cant remember that many pubs. There only seemed to be one or two from what i recall?!?!??

I mean we only need one good pub i spose but didnt really find that in Ambleside.

Walking and stuff - to be honest we'll just be pottering about. hte misses aint even got hiking boots so just strolling about which is partly why Keswick appealed cos i figured it'd have stuff to do not too far off the beaten track since we cant go far in a pair a trainers!!!!

Thanks again mate

You can easily walk down by the lake in trainers as long as it's not pissing down. There's also rowing boats for hire. There should be plenty of pubs to try out but the atmosphere might not be up to much as they'll be full of tourists. Just have a mosey about and look for pubs away from the main streets.
If you're lying, I'll chop your head off.

Cleator Moor is shit, used to go to school there.  Have never found Windermere to be full of South Lakes c*nts, always thought it was nice and pleasent, decent smattering of pubs and restraunts. If you have sea legs you could always go on a boat crusie on the lakes, thats ok too.

I love the Lakes.

Although it doesnt fit the bill of what you have asked, I would recommend Grasmere in particular a walk up Easedale Tarn, beautiful at the top. It's basically a 50 mins walk up hill, past a waterfall on the way, at the top there is a Lake on top of a mountain, if you time it right you can be the onl people up there!!

Even if only for day visit well worth it, few nice pubs and meals, etc.

I am sure you will enjoy wherever u go, we fell in love with the Lakes and even had our wedding day up there.

Coniston is much less touristy. You can row on the lake, and the walk up the Old Man makes your pint in The Sun Inn taste so much better. The Black Bull brews the International Medal winning Bluebird Ale which is liquid heaven. I love the place, Lake District without the crap, but  near enough to Hawkshead, Ambleside, etc if you need your Beatrix Potter commemorative keyring set!

Try Grasmere.
Hopes may rise there.

Looking slightly further afield, if you see signs for Workington- don't go there.

Keswick is fine. Big enough to find whatever rings your bell. Prefer Ambleside myself (as for pubs there by the way- I think there's only the Golden Rule of any note whatsoever unfortunately). Think the shouts for Grasmere and Coniston are good ones. Bit smaller and more intimate and less busy (perhaps-once the daytime rush has abated anyway). Both are close enough to Ambleside in any case and open up other opportunities, especially coniston,to get alittle bit more off the beaten track in terms of scenery/walking etc. Another possibility is Boot and the Eskdale area. Seemingly isolated but a surprising number of good places to eat and drink.

Well we went to Keswick and had a cracking time, perfect for what we wanted for this trip.

We drove back through the lakes and stopped off at a few places to try and decide somewhere to go with eh kids in the summer. I'll summaries our thoughts in case anyone else is looking at somewhere to go...

Kendal - Big and very very touristy, loads of restaurants and bars but also KFC and McDonald's. Not really experiencing the lakes going there.

Keswick - Smaller than Kendal but still big for the lakes although keeps some of the local charm. lots or restaurants and quite a few bars. Right on the edge of some very nice scenery but a little bit big for those after a true lakes experience but great if you want a sanitised version with a few shops to look round

Ambleside - Smaller again but still has a few shops and quite a few bars and restaurants (but less than Keswick) more quaint that Keswick but does have a busy road though the middle and quite hilly so maybe not totally child friendly (although we are looking to go here for a week in the summer as its a cracking base right in the middle of the lakes) Has some excellent restaurants, i can personally recommend Lucy's. they have a deli and restaurant and a bistro in Ambleside. THE puddings are out of this world and they have 35 on the menu! service a Little poor though but doesn't spoil it

Windermere - Obviously based around the lake and had many restaurants and pubs. Very picturesque.larger than Keswick but smaller than Kendal

Grasmere - the pick of the bunch by far, exactly as the lakes should be and perfect for a couple away for a romantic weekend. the gorgeous scenery is still part of the town with many large trees and a stream running through the middle. probably a bit lacking on pubs and restaurants and it is the smallest of them all but is by far the nicest on the eye and has yet to be spoilt by big big brands and chains moving into the area. Still fairly central and a good base for ambleside and windermere and keswick

I love the Lake District :). I enjoyed Windermere, Hawkshead, Ullswater and Keswick, but my two favourites were Grasmere and Ambleside 8). Especially enjoyed the beautiful views from hiking around Grasmere, have fun :wave

Will defo be off back to Grasmere so will get some one day!

If anyone goes to Ambleside go to Lucy's and have the toffee banofee pie.

Banoffe pie with milk chocolate in with the toffee at the bottom, you get a massive wedge.

I felt satisfyingly sick after it!

Well we went to Keswick and had a cracking time, perfect for what we wanted for this trip.
Still fairly central and a good base for ambleside and windermere and keswick

knew you would love it there, my fave place in the Lakes, even though we married in Kendal, had reception in Newby Bridge and first part og honeymoon in Natland.  Did you make it up Easedale Tarn?

were only there for one full day so only did one proper walk.

Went up Walla crack and to Newby Bridge ( i think thats right!) its 1000ft up and takes about 4 hours so nothing too heavy but enough for us!

Then had a wander up to the water fall in Ambleside. Defo gunno go to the lakes more.

Taking the kids in a self catering place at start of summer for a week just need to find somewhere, prob around amlbeside area.

And gunna have a couple a weekends away wi the misses prob to Grasmere i think

I'm going up to The Lakes for my 1st time in August. Going with my dad (a pro), my brother (been a couple of times) and his mate. Staying in Ambleside and looking to do the "big walks" like Scafell Pike / Helvellyn / Blencathra etc. Going up for 3 days and will probably climb 1 a day if the weather holds.

Really really looking forward to it as I've wanted to go for ages and I also saw the Wainwrights Walks on TV recently which has whet my appetite even more!

I live just near Keswick and have been many times... there are plenty of nice little pubs and it is a lovely place just to walk around and chill in. Its definately a place i would recommend.  :)
