I've been twice and think it is a truly fantastic place to see. You must go at least once in your life.
2 stories from my 1st trip, I must have been about 14 yrs old, went with my older brother and dad. Dad had told us to say "no" to people that asked/offered anything....
1) Walked up the subway stairs into Times Square and my older brother buys some fags off a street vendor. Black guys clocks this and starts hassling for a fag, my dad's going "no" "tell him no", getting a bit heated and then the black fella says "what's the matter, you don't like niggers or something?" At that point, my dad says "no" who is obviously talking to my brother, but for what felt like 1 minute, there was a stunned silence and you could have cut the atmosphere with a knife.
2) On a bus, waiting to get back to our hotel to catch flight back home. Student protest going on in the streets and the bus was moving nowhere. We got off and decided to run as it was only
4 blocks away! We were running/jogging at a decent pace and managed to catch most of the flashing crossings just in time. Came to another crossing and it was flashing "Don't Walk" but we did and I swear to god, the police car that ran me down, yes, ran me down! sped up to catch me "jaywalking"! Well, I went over the bonnet and came off the car the other side with both cops getting out the car with hands hovering over their guns and my dad telling them "I was ok", "everything was ok" and we carried on running to the hotel. I was just badly bruised and scraped my leg / knee, but spose I was lucky not to get done for jaywalking! Mad to look back actually!
Anyway, you'll have fun, use your common sense as if you were in London and you'll be fine. Oh, don't jaywalk!!
