The Anfield "Plaza" - Chance to retain our roots
« on: September 29, 2006, 07:57:23 am »
I am interested in knowing how the Plaza, shops etc are going to be worked out when we leave old Anfield and the stands are dismantled - I doubt they would do this but the best memorial to old Anfield in my opinion would be to leave the exact footprint of the pitch as open space (not necessarily grassed).

The pitch area could have plaques upon it commemorating those who have had ashes buried or spread (maybe the Hillsborough Memorial if the families wanted it to be associated more with old Anfield than new) and the whole thing would remain a focus in its own right.

There could be almost a Hollywood Boulevard on the ground - plaques or footprints of our greatest players, commemorations of particular places (McDermott's header, Xabi's tap in, Luis' ball over the line, Fairclough's St Etienne winner, Phil Babb's bollocks?).

The area could be concrete but green with the pitch laid out on it.

Suddenly the whole area would be still open ground and a great focus to allow us, who have been kept away from the pitch, to stand and reminisce over what we witnessed over the years.

I think as we are moving keeping the footprint of the old Anfield as open space is the least nod to our roots we can expect.

Please Rick, no Pizza Hut and Borders on the sacred ground....

What about a Netto where one of the goals used to be?

Or an Old People's Home where the Main Stand was?

To be honest i think thats a brilliant idea smoth.

Ive not really thought about what would happen the the site if we moved and it would be brilliant if we could go and stand where the pitch once was.
In some way we have to comemmorate all the glorious moments that have happened both at anfield and to the club as a whole and to do it at the old anfield pitch, i belive is the best option.

Maybe stay away form the idea of a "Hollywood Boulevard" but a kind of open air museum kind of thing.

Does anyone know what is happeneing to highbury?

That's a fucking brilliant idea, but you just know as Danny B says above there is going to be a fucking Netto were the goal was and a Laundrette where the tunnel was.

What a brilliant place to go and have a beer before the game it would be if they did it properly.

Nice idea.

At Highbury the East & West stands are listed buildings so will remain and converted into flats.  Premiums prices were paid for flats that will have been the old dressing room etc :D

Anyway, I think the pitch will remain as an open space allowing kids to play 'on the pitch' as it were.

Does anyone know if there are any plans showing what the old Anfield area is planned to look like after the development - anything published anywhere?

These are my own opinions. They are not meant or intended as a criticism of anyone else's opinion just because they are different but if you can't see past that, then tough shit!

Couldn't really be bothered to start a new thread to ask this question and this seemes the most appropriate thread.

Why has the row of houses that runs parallel with the Kop next to the Albert been knocked down? Is this part of the stadium plans for regenerating the area or is it an outside project by the council etc?

Council work:

The bulldozers move in to cheers
Aug 11 2006
By Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

BULLDOZERS have moved into a terraced street to kickstart long-awaited plans to rebuild a crumbling community.

Residents celebrated as the demolition of boarded-up houses in Lake Street, Anfield, finally started.

Many of the Victorian two-up, two-down properties had been empty for years and will be wiped from the map within a few weeks.

The houses have been in the shadow of Liverpool FC's Anfield stadium for generations, but were declared past their sell-by date by housing experts.

Lake Street is the first of a cluster of roads in Anfield due to be pulled down to make way for new homes.

Regeneration firm New Heartlands is working on an £89m plan to demolish up to 1,600 properties and rebuild and refurbish hundreds more.

A group of residents turned out yesterday to watch workmen start demolishing the street.

Anfield resident Ros Groves, a member of the area's housing regeneration group, said: "After seven years of meetings and consultation, we are delighted that at last we are seeing some progress. We are now looking forward to making sure our community improves."

Anfield is one of several neighbourhoods about to go through controversial changes, with many residents having already moved to other areas, leaving some streets part-derelict.

Families in the V Streets, on the other side of Walton Breck Road to Lake Street, say their lives are being made a misery by vandals and arsonists smashing up or setting fire to empty homes.

But Pauline Davis, managing director of New Heartlands, predicted a bright future for the community.

She said: "It is great news for Anfield that we are making progress, as these changes are what local people want.

"The demolition of Lake Street marks a fresh start for this community. New and refurbished homes will follow to help create a 21st century neighbourhood."

Cllr Marilyn Fielding, executive member for housing, said: "Residents have been extremely patient and we are pleased to support them as they celebrate progress."

Sounds like only good things are going to be happening in the area in the next few years. Thanks for posting that mate, it was a surprise at the Gala game to see that because the last time I was at Anfield was for the Haifa game.

It isn't a public park I think from looking at the apartment details I had some time back. I think its a private residents garden
