Rafa's joy tempered by more injury woe
« on: August 22, 2006, 10:53:43 pm »
Mark Platt in Kiev 22 August 2006

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N153252060822-2219.htm

Rafael Benitez spoke of his delight after Liverpool confirmed their place Friday's Champions League group phase draw but admitted his satisfaction was tempered by two new injury setbacks.
Peter Crouch's goal in the 1-1 draw against Maccabi Haifa in Kiev was enough to secure an aggregate 3-2 success but it wasn’t all good news for the Reds as both Stephen Warnock and Momo Sissoko were forced off with ankle and knee problems respectively.

"It was a difficult game but it's good to have qualified. I am really happy," said Benitez. "It's not been easy to start pre-season without some players and our results in pre-season were not the best so it's always a relief to come through a tie like this. I am sure that once the international break is out of the way you will see the team improve.

"In the first half we had a lot of clear chances but their goalkeeper was fantastic. In my opinion, he was man of the match. We had some problems towards the end defensively but that is normal when a team is chasing the game. In these situations we need to score again to kill the game.

"But it was very disappointing to lose another two players through injury. Stephen's is hopefully not too serious but Momo could be out for two or three weeks. We will have to see."

Hopefully in The Momo Kingdom, 2 or 3 weeks actually means 2 or 3 days.

No carragher or Momo for everton.

After west ham this saturday we dont play till we goto woodison on the 9th. Both Momo and Carra could be alright by then if 2-3 weeks is accurate.

Still a chance both will make it theres plenty of time till the derby We have the international break after the west ham game so theres still 2 1/2 weeks to get them fit.

If not, we still have all the weapons to beat them with :D

this sucks.. 4 players out for atleast 15-20 days... I hope they get better soon, something makes me think that Rafa's gonna use Paletta soon either that or the best bet would be to go into a 3-5-2 formation or something.. anyhow the boss is smart lets see what happens

Nobody has commented on Steve Warnock's injury, but that is a blow to squad depth. If Paletta is injured as I'd heard, we now have 4 injuries in the back. Losing Sissoko hurts, but the midfield still puts out formidable players (Gerrard, Alonso, Garcia, Pennant, Zenden and Gonzalez). The real test will come with the rash of injuries in the back. Kromkamp, Agger, Finnan and Hyypia... not exactly a back line to strike fear in the hearts of other squads. We'd best be on our best form up front, or it could be a long few weeks.

He has been immense for us so far in this early stage of the season. Gonna be a huge loss in the big games we have coming up.

Couldn't enjoy the result - devastated by Momo's injury, and so called experts on here saying 6-8 months ...
so 2-3 weeks is brilliant ...

Bit similar to Benfica last year when we were led to believe he'd be out for the season, and possibly never play again,
but this lad recovers quick and wants to be out there.

Get well soon Momo ...

When I saw Momo's injury, I was convinced it was the cruciate, and all i could think of was 'how the fuck are we going to challenge no?'

2-3 weeks is fuckin brilliant news, and as someone above said, knowing Sissoko this probably means about 10 minutes!

You are right medial ligament is serious - we all have them in our knees; without them we wouldn't be able to function...  much the same as we all have knees, hips and lungs...

However, you never said if it was an injury to the medial ligament.  You simply said he had a medial ligament which I hope he has...

Now, a serious injury to it would be a torn (ruptured) ligament but this looks like it's a sprain - which although sore is not serious.

2 weeks he's out for according to the Official site:

Liverpool have confirmed that Momo Sissoko will be out of action for two weeks with the knee injury he sustained during last night's Champions League qualifier in Kiev.

Sissoko left the stadium on crutches and had a scan on Merseyside today which confirmed the Reds' initial diagnosis.

"Momo had a scan today which showed a tear of the medial ligament in his left knee," said Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton.

"We do not expect him to be able to play or train for the next two weeks."

Sissoko will definitely miss this weekend's Premiership clash with West Ham United at Anfield but could be back for the derby at Goodison on September 9.

When he went down it looked like a ligament injury and a bad one.
I know now that I should have posted that maybe he could have been out for 6-8 months but my dismay got the better of me.
I am so glad to be proven wrong in my estimate of how long he would be out for but had it been the cruciate ligament he would most likely have been out for the season (6-8 months at least)

If a tear is "serious" how can that heal in 2 weeks??
