What's your choice?

I'm on PC, so just looking at the Metacritic rankings.

1. Half-Life: Alyx (93)

2. Hades (93)

3. Microsoft Flight Simulator (91)

4. Crusader Kings III (91)

5. Spelunky 2 (91)

6. There is no game : Wrong dimension (89)

7. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 (88)

8. Ori and the Will of the Wisps (88)

9. Halo: The Master Chief Collection - Halo 3 (88)

10. F1 2020 (88)

11. DOOM Eternal (88)

Half-Life: Alyx is VR which I don't have, but Hades tying for top place seems about right to me (even if this year was the formal release after being on early access prior). Incredibly good roguelite and I've spent surprisingly more time in that than in CK3. Also great to see Supergiant Games as a small studio having such (relatively) large success.

For me it's Wasteland 3. Played that the most of the games that have come out this year. Have discovered Farming Simulator 19 though this year through it being free in the Epic Store and really played that loads with mods.

Hades for me.
It's a remarkably tight and polished game, delivered by a small, creative studio on top of their game.
Hades is everything that is good and worth supporting in the world of video games.

Not a bad year, plenty of controversy as well. Nintendo have a had a poor year, unless you like stupid cute animals.

My number 1 is a work of art. Some folk didnt get the walking bit and hate stories. Relaxing and weird, with the best soundtrack of just about any game ever.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 took me back to the early 2000's.

That soundtrack was my mid/late teens so to hear that kick in for the 1st time it was like I was holding that PS1 dualshock again in my bedroom on an old CRT TV. Holding back finishing a high score so I can hear the last of CKY etc

There has been loads of badly made skating games since and it's easy to make a bad one. This year's iteration played so well and captured what made the 1st 2 games great and brought it up to date. Was so happy playing that

FF7 remake was also a personal highlight. Ever since it was announced way back at e3 2015 it was always going to be high on any list for me. I think they did an amazing job recreating what is a deeply personal game for a lot of people and making it work (by in large). Taking a turn based RPG and making it work in 2020 is an achievement in itself (as Cyberpunk 2077 is proving). I can't wait to see what they do with the next part of the story.

to be honest Paper Mario barely makes the list. Wasn’t that impressed.

NB I’ve bought Star Wars Squadrons but haven’t played it yet as I’m getting the VR setup for Christmas. I’m also getting AC Valhalla. I’d be surprised if both of those weren’t high on my list.

On PC and Switch. Not sure I played a game from this year that I reeeeeaally loved to be honest.

I'm quite enjoying Cyberpunk but even on a decent machine it's probably overpromised just a tiny bit. Animal Crossing was pretty good, and I reckon I'd have really liked Ghost of Tsushima, but I don't have a PS4.

In fact, this is probably the year that's made me want a PS more than most. The games I really want to play, TLOU2, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ghost of Tsushima, Nioh 2, Demon Souls and maybe the FFVII remake, are all PS exclusives. They've hit it out of the park this year and they'll probably be rewarded with my money in the next 12-18 months.

For the games I've played from this year, I guess:

Animal Crossing
Cyberpunk 2077

I might pick up Hades because I can at some point, but the slate of releases for Nintendo this year has been.. not underwhelming but nothing hugely memorable.

Yeah it's not been great, don't think I've even bought anything which might be down to having loads of freebies to play on PSN, Epic and game pass on PC plus my regular diet of Ark, No Man's Sky, Elite Dangerous & Dwarf Fortress

End of a console generation. Was never going to be an incredible year outside what games were delayed and promised years ago.

The Cyberpunk fiasco is going to be a big deal over future games. On one hand you would hope there will now be better games coming through the making process. But on the other, developers will not want to take risks. Games will have to fit into more specific molds to ensure they get the reception they need to be successful.

I would be a lot happier if I had a PS5 with Spider-Man and Demon's Souls.

As it is I didn't get one so I've been smashing some older games from the PS4 gen that I never got around to playing, like Soulsborne and Devil May Cry.

My GOTY concerning ones I've actually played is probably Final Fantasy VII Remake or Persona 5 Royal.

guess some of these probably came out earlier than this year, especially on other consoles. But still.
