Kwak

Belgian beer, decent but I prefer the wheat beers, you can get it from decent pubs in town like Fly in the Loaf or Ship and Mitre (a £10 deposit on the glass though, in Belgium I've heard it's your left shoe behind the bar)

I love wheat beers- but haven't really tried many! Am applying for internships, and there's one with a few weeks international... Belgium was on the list of the ones I could do (they only want an English speaking person- no other language)- and my immediate thought was "think of the beer I could experience!" Would be great getting stuck into that... left shoe or no left shoe.

Not too fond of the Belgian wheatbeers like Hoegaarden but the German Weißbiers (Weissbeer) are fucking lovely.
Pubs in town do festivals, Ship and Mitre has a German beer festival coming up on the 25th to the 29th and the people running them always tell you the best ones, I had an organic one a few weeks ago that was lovely.

There's also one with a polar bear on the front, that's my favourite.

Ah! I had Weissbeer just the other day- it was decent, but I like Hoegaarden more.... could have been because the Weissbeer wasn't cold enough though.

I love it when the Germans come to town  :P Here in Nottingham, there was a German market over Christmas time- ice rink was up in market square, and open air bars with all the Christmas stuff going on and barbecues too. Some shopping, then relax with a nice pint of wheatbeer and a German sausage with bun fresh of the barbecue. Brilliant. I can't wait until I have the time/likeminded friends to go to Oktoberfest...

They have a tiny little European market here with a tent that does steins of beer.

I don't trust a beer that you have a lemon slice with...sorry...pinched a few of the glasses in my time though.

I drink lager when chilling out/eating, and when feeling like a bit of a connoisseur go for the 'proper' beers. So....... it means I've had a few Coronas (with lime  :-X) in my time! Didn't know Hoegaarden was meant to be served with lemon though... Not pinched a glass though- I reckon that one in the Kwak picture would tempt me though.

don't get many Belgians spoiling Hoegaarden by putting lemon in it.

I went to the German Market in Hyde Park over the Christmas period. Fucking loved the beer, but being a student and on a night out, you're not going to get any of that in a club unfortunately. Fosters it is...

Tried this whilst in Belgian last year. Loved it. London pubs are a pile of wank. We have a nice one next to our hospital, fucking disgraceful what they offer.

I love the Erdinger, though I got quite a taste for the Dortmunder Weisse back in 2001  :lickin

Being the closet homosexual that I am I actually think that the lemon in Hoegaarden works.  I mean if you are going to start putting coriander in a beer then you can hardly quibble about a lemon.  Chilled Hoegaarden is also God's own accompaniment to curries. Fact.

I do like Kwak but I have avoided it since a late night beer fuelled discussion distracted me from the fact that I couldn't just stick the glass down on the table in order to more forcefully make my point.  It's weeble shape but it don't wobble, it just falls down and pours Belgian ale all over your lap.  Flat bottomed glasses for me hence forward.

For something a bit different in the bottled lager / ale line the good ol US of A, land of the free and home of the bland actually produces some really nice small brews to go alongside the tasteless swill they mass produce.  I'd recommend giving Brooklyn lager a try.

Not had that but the Brooklyn Lager is actually more of a pale ale, really light, refreshing but very bitter.  It's one of those that you recoil from on the first taste and then think "Akssshly that's rather good".

I'm partial to Baltika.  It was the only Russian beer we tried that didn't seem to come pre-packed with a minging hangover.  You only ever seem to see the "3" over here though. They do a full range from alcohol free "0" to "9" which over here would be your park bench tipple but in Russia is a commute to work aperitif.

We took a bought a clutch of them at a kiosk outside that station and had a tasting session on our overnight train from St. Pete's to Vilnius.  Not sure which is which now but 6, 7 and 8 were the best.  One was a stronger version of "3", one was a formidable 7% dark, porter like beer and one was a wheat beer.

Last weekend i had 4 Leffe Blonde's and i was amazed, bloody fantastic.

It's inspired me and me mates to have night of beer tasting, basically looking for suggestions, i would like some people in here to recommend 6 beers that are obviously specialty beers that can be bought in a supermarket or off licence.

cheers in advance

Love a good pale ale. They make you stomach churn a bit after ten or twelve.

Tried this not long ago... Pretty decent but shit it will put some hair on your balls..
