Liverpool FC Forum / Re: The Title Race 2023/24- Jurgen's Last Dance

If we want to truly challenge for the league till the final day of the season, more than tightening up the defence and being more clinical (both equally important) we have to get to the bottom of why we have so many injuries. Refreshing the fitness staff, more controlled football, less intense pre-season. Whatever it is we have to change something.

Also, going behind in over 20 games is going to take its toll mentally and physically because the game state is you are constantly chasing the game. Not sustainable.

If FSG were trying to turn us into a sort of Red Bull on steroids, they’ve done a pretty bad job of it over the last 10 years, consistently letting players walk on free transfers and allowing them to pass their peak, probably to appease the manager.

Is that ultimately were the friction/professional differences was with Klopp and Edwards? Edwards wanted to rebuild the team quicker, Klopp wanted to keep it together. And you do need a mix of both. If it was up to Klopp for example then Gini probably gets the deal he wants and if it's up to Edwards then Henderson doesn't. And signing a 30 year old in Thiago for 4 years, with a bad injury history, when you've already got an ageing midfield isn't good strategy. Keita/Ox were meant to be the midfielders in their prime in the squad but weren't good enough/durable enough and far too slow to be moved on and allowed to run their contracts down.

The players who have left it's usually been their choice. Either in running down their contracts or wanted to leave (Mane to Bayern and Henderson or Fabinho to Saudi). Mane could have just been another one to run his contract down. Virg, Trent and Salah can all do the same now in their last 12 months.

Wonder if we're looking at Calafiori at Bologna, seems to have had a great season at CB under Motta and is only 21

I like Diaz, he has fire in his belly and he's direct and dangerous.

That said, it kind of sounds like he and family do fancy a move to Barcelona or perhaps PSG. At 27 maybe he wants another big move, it's now long established how South American players revere Barca.

Barca cannot afford a tuna sandwich from Pret at the minute, unless they are selling multiple players. If we could get a large fee for Diaz, Edwards may conclude we can do business, in order to replace him with a younger player with better production on assists & goals.

Seems plausible, to sort out the right-side attacker role, given Dom, Darwin and Jota can all play LEFT side if Diaz leaves.

The Boston Celtics regained the lead in their NBA Eastern Conference semi-final against the Cleveland Cavaliers with a 106-93 victory on the road.

Top-seeded Boston, who were stunned by the Cavaliers at home in game two, edged the first quarter by two points and never relinquished their lead.

The Celtics now take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series into game four in Cleveland on Monday.

Jayson Tatum hit 33 points for the Celtics, while Jaylen Brown added 28.

This is the discussion I’ve had recently.    I’ve read somewhere that migrants are always economically active and pay taxes.

Something I never see discussed is that we have an aging population.   Birth rate is now lower than the death rate.   This phenomenon is not restricted to this country.    So we actually need immigrants!

The ageing population gets talked about a fair bit I’d say, the low and declining birth rate, a lot less. But it goes back to the same point, why are people not having kids? Because children are a huge commitment for a person to make, and in this time of high cost of living, stalled wages and most importantly I’d say unaffordable housing in particular as people tend not to have kids if they are still living in their parents home or insecure housing, and having a housing shortage while at the same time having record immigration is asking for trouble not that I think the Tories mind as they quite like pitching the native against the immigrant (“British homes for British people”) and the home owning over 50’s against the avocado on toast eating millennials, but it is still an issue when you build 250,000 homes but have 700,000 net people coming to the country.

Top story on the bbc website is the Eurovision winner.

Good to see they've got their priorities in order.

May 12th
1965 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the European Cup as we lost 3-0 at Internazionale, going out at the Semi-final stage 4-3 on aggregate. The match was highly controversial with Inter’s first goal coming direct from a contentiously-awarded indirect free-kick, and the second coming after the ball was kicked out of Tommy Lawrence’s hands. Ian St. John also had a goal mysteriously disallowed. Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran played his 379th and final reds game in this match.

1969 - We lost at reigning champions Manchester City, Francis Lee struck the only goal of the game, one of his six past us.

1978 - David Fairclough scored a hat-trick as we drew 5-5 with Bolton Wanderers in a testimonial for ex-red Peter Thompson at Burnden Park. Toffee Duncan Mackenzie added a brace while guesting for the reds.

1984 - We clinched our fifteenth League title by holding Notts County to a goalless draw at Meadow Lane. This was our third consecutive championship, and the second part of a glorious treble claimed by Joe Fagan in his first season in charge. Left-back Alan Kennedy was playing his 300th reds game.

2001 - Michael Owen won the cup! A glorious day in our recent history saw us clinch the FA Cup in Cardiff, the second leg of the treble, despite going behind to a Freddie Ljungberg goal after surviving repeated Arsenal attacks, sometimes through dubious means! Two late, late Michael Owen goals won us the cup, and the Millennium Stadium was awash with overjoyed reds. This was the first time we had won an FA Cup Final while wearing an away kit.

2011 - Kenny Dalglish was re-appointed Manager permanently, leading us to a League Cup triumph at Wembley and 36 wins in 74 games until being sacked a year later. First-team coach Steve Clarke signed a new three-year contract on the same day.

2013 – Daniel Sturridge bagged his only reds hat-trick as we won 3-1 at Fulham, with Jonjo Shelvey playing his 69th and last reds game. Dimitar Berbatov had put the home side in front with the last of his five goals past us.

2019 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield to secure a club record 97 points, a total only bettered twice in top-flight history, including Manchester City who ended the day on 98. Sadio Mané struck twice to end the campaign on 22 goals, sharing the Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Alisson Becker kept his 21st League clean sheet of the season to claim the Golden Glove with a total only bettered once in Premier League history.
