Pretoria - Police expressed “surprise” on Thursday at reports that the shooting at Paralympian Oscar Pistorius' house was an accident.

“The SA Police Service were just as surpised this morning to hear on the radio that allegations had been made that the deceased had been perceived to be a burglar,” police spokeswoman Brigadier Denise Beukes said.

“We were very surprised and those allegations did not come from us.”

Early on Thursday, Beeld newspaper reported on its website that Pistorius allegedly accidentally shot dead his girlfriend after mistaking her for a robber.

Police spokeswoman Captain Sarah Mcira confirmed this to Beeld, the report said.

Beukes was briefing reporters outside Silver Woods estate in Pretoria, where Steenkamp was shot dead in Pistorius' house in the early hours of the morning.

She did not name 26-year-old Pistorius, in accordance with SA law, but said he and Steenkamp were the only people in the house at the time of the shooting.

She said there was no sign of forced entry into Pretorius' house.

Beukes said bail for Pistorius would be opposed when he appears in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court later on Thursday.

“He will appear in court at 2pm and bail will be opposed,” she said.

'Could be seen as just as shallow'? This is in the news. We read the news, we watch the news. It's a news story. It's not remotely shallow to say 'it's tragic' simply because it's news. A mate of mine had a mate die in Ireland before Christmas, found his body in a river. That was tragic too. But it wasn't 'celebrity news' so therefore you wouldn't come on RAWK and comment on it.

Yeah that was one of my first thoughts. As for how and why it happened, none of us know. It's yet another person shot dead with a legally held gun and a young women has lost her life, a real tragedy how ever you look at it.

Anyway, don't you think that if you saw a burglar then you would give them some sort of threat or warning? And if you were to shoot them, then aim for their legs do as not to kill them but to immobilisr them? Or is it because that this is in South Africa, you're entitled to kill somebody trespassing/stealing because of the amount of crime?

Or until we know more, could it be he got into an argument with her (as Police have alluded to it happening before) and shot her and it had nothing to do with mistaken identity? From what the police are saying and have said, seems more like he's just lost it with her and shot her.

This is what I think has happened, unfortunately. The allegations of arguments in the past between the two is what led me to that conclusion and the whole sneaking in to set up a secret valentines day thing in the middle of the night seems unlikely to me.

Nothing really but when people die tragically you will hear, "It's a waste he/she was so, young, talented, friendly, kind..." as well as post a picture of said person. So I don't see much wrong with someone mentioning her appearance. The implication isn't that she is more deserving of life the same as someone talented isn't more deserving of life. They are simply mentioning a characteristic of the person.

Because it's less flattering. If the person was known for having the sexiest hooked nose it would probably be mentioned. The girl who died was a SA FHM model and made a living off her looks. As her looks is related to her job I'm not surprised that some would mention her physical appearance.

I think the appearance comments are more about a young healthy person in the prime of their life - usually a bigger shock than e.g. someone whos been on the streets for years. All equally tragic, in fact sometimes more tragic for those that have lost their way, but the loss of a young promising life has got to be one of the hardest hitting. RIP

And why would he shoot a woman entering his home before A. shouting out to see who it might be first and B. waiting to see if it's an intruder?

Interesting how people are willing to jump to the defence of someone they don't know, just because he is an athlete. It doesn't mean he isn't capable of being an utter c*nt, who might have beat his girlfriend up and finally murdered her.
