Wen to Smugglers Cove last week and it was alright but nothing great, certainly not terrible though

No idea what I had at the Nepalese place now as it was after a couple of pints... But surely I'd remember having a Momo...!

:D   - they are a bit like Chinese Dumplings but with Nepalese Spices and served with a spicy sauce

Anyone been to Tulays Turkish Restaurant on South Road?

My mum has booked it for my birthday next month!
It's alright for a birthday, nice enough place. Sometimes the kebabs are good some times a bit overcooked and dry. Can be decent but not consistent.

Went Italian Pizza club on Saturday night. It is a bit rough and ready in terms of décor but the pizza is the best in Liverpool for me

Is that the Italian Club on Bold Street? If so I second it. Went there when we were in town a couple of weeks back and the pasta dishes we had were outstanding. Not a very extensive menu and it ain't 'fine dining' by any stretch but for outstanding quality food at exceptional prices then you'd be hard pressed to find anything better. I'm giving the pizzas a go next time, they looked marvellous when they were being bought to nearby tables.

They are owned by the same family / company I think, the pizza club is beside the Egg cafe off Renshaw street.

The Italian club is also quality

Rob Guttman is active nowadays it seems? He`s the owner of Motel, Yardbird and Death Row diner as well? I`ve been to Motel. Has anyone been to the other ones?

I have been to yardbird and motel for drinks. Really liked yardbird and think that the next time I am in town I will see what their food is like as from what I saw on the benches by us it looked great.. Wasn't a big fan of motel though to be honest

Went the Salt House Baraco in Castle street, which is a sort of Italian tapas place, which is unusual concept. The first thing I liked was the atmosphere and the friendly staff which is one of the reasons I liked the original Salt House Tapas where you always felt welcome. It's a bar with tables rather than a restaurant and get's it right for me, you might describe it as fairly trendy without being pretentious, not full of the 'look at me I'm an extra in Hollyoaks and on the look out for a footballer' crowd that spoilt the San Carlo, this is far more relaxed and much the better for it

The portion sizes are fairly large for tapas and more raciones size in Spanish terms which lend themselves more to individual dishes rather than sharing, we got two each after our starters and we were quite satisfied portion wise. I had fillet steak with tempura scallops and Blackpudding, chicken livers in a marsalla sauce and the rest of our party had pan fried seabass, fritto misto, little pizzas, confit of duck leg, tagliatelle bolognese and crab linguine with chilli, which were all very good without being spectacular. It's not fine dining and doesn't try to be it's good food with a bit of thought and care gone into it.

The bill came to £80 between the four of us with drinks, which is only £20 a head for a very enjoyable break from Xmas shopping, i'd reccomend the place, we eat of the a la carte menu but the lunch menu looks very good value and I'll be trying it next time I'm in town of a dinnertime.

Agree with 92A, Bacaro was very nice indeed.

Has anyone been to Mowgli on Bold St? Seems very nice, would love to go some day. Apologies if someone has reviewed that, I am too lazy to go through the last few pages :)

Went to Lunya last night for our work Christmas night. Tapas is my favourite food so it's a wonder I haven't been there before but it was genuine quality. Had Calimari, Octopus, Bravas and Lamb. Everything was rich in flavour and a good portion size. I will definitely be going back there. Streets above Salt House and La Tascas IMO but I still have a lot of affection for Neon Jamon though that's very unique.

Lunya and Neon Jamon deffo the pick of the bunch for tapas in Liverpool I think.  Having said that I do love Bacaro and Little Italy for an italian twist on things now and again.

Lunya is outstanding, even for a quick breakfast and coffee right by the deli, watching people buying all sorts of Spanish food, really pleasant.

We've been to Amalia twice in the past few weeks, one of (if not the best) pizzas I have had outside of Napoli.

And Rookwood, what a burger!  Delicious, well priced, did I say delicious? ;-)  It is, however, what I term  destination joint as you'll be there a while waiting for your food, so if you don't mind chatting and drinking for a while, it's great.  If your conversations are normally full of awkward silences and sips of cucumber water, not so good.

I challenge you to a pizza-off

I really like Amalia but I'm sticking by my guns and saying Italian Pizza club is as good a pizza as you can get in Liverpool, albeit in much humbler surroundings

Went to Art school restaurant at the weekend, seen a review on here at one stage so decided to go along and I was very impressed. I'm not really one for fine dining, we went for the Prix fixe menu. I would recommend it here if you have an occasion to celebrate, the attention to detail from the staff was second to none and the food was excellent.

I've been the one in Manchester a few times, very decent for a chain and value for money, salmon starter followed by steak frites and creme caramel all the way for sub £15 on the early bird menu.

Can't have somewhere like Liverpool getting above its station, that review said to me when I saw it in the paper.

"Haha look at the proles trying to have nice food, they don't even know what it is up north, this menu is all stuff we in London were over in 1999 darling, so backwards, but not enough to even be quaint"

Always insufferably pretentious those reviews.

That's how I read it, there is no culture outside of London, the sooner we extricate ourselves from London the better.

It is a common theme with London restaurant reviewers, always chasing the next big thing and finding the regions so antiquated.  It's a strange trait when you think about it because good cooking and good food is essentially timeless.  One of my favourite restaurants is The Albannach way up in NW Scotland, we go every year, the menu changes little and is certainly not hugely influenced by the latest trends in London, Catalunya or Copenhagen.  What you do get though, every time, is fantastic fresh local ingredients, beautifully matched and perfectly prepared.  If you want any more then you are kinda missing the point I think.

Anyway, I'm going to Art School a week tonight and I'll post on here about it

Trite fashion. The same people once were raving about kiwi and balsamic fifteen years ago now turn their ire to sous vide because it's just so old hat, that is until some one ironically sous vides a kiwi and dresses it in balsamic in an ironic way then you can like it.

Deconstructed also seems to be the in vogue expression to get critical approval as in "Tarquin and I went for the deconstructed Eintopf consisting of braised and finely chopped lamb accompanied by delicately sliced potatoes, freshly steamed young carrots with just a hint of honey, lightly fried and discretely chopped cepa, all of which was immersed in a savoury juis made from bone stock, olive oil and fine hand sifted flour and served with a generous side plate of Pain de mie dressed with fresh salted cream that had been lovingly kneaded to a fine texture for several hours..."   ie a bowl of stew with some slices of bread and butter..

Went to that Button Street Smokehouse on Thursday after shopping and got to say it was fantastic. Got the burnt ends and chicken wings as a starter to share between us and then for my main I got the Jacobs ladder with hush puppies. Hush puppies were delicious but probably a bit too sweet to have with the type of meal I was having. The meat though was fantastic and just fell off the bone and the half rack of ribs that my sister got was the size of a full rack in most other places! Highly recommend it and cost 55 quid for 3 of us so relatively cheap as well.

The only issue I have really is that the starters didn't come with plates so had to use the roll of tissue that comes on the table to eat my food off and couldn't find the waitresss to ask for plates although when we got out mains she did come back within 10 minutes to ask if everything was ok.

Went to Mowgli on Bold Street last night it was excellent.  Between the two of us we shared, tamarind water bombs, rooti, one of the best lamb curry's I have ever tasted, dhal, mowgli slaw, tea steeped chickpeas.  Total for the food was £25.  A nice bottle of Gewurztraminer and a couple of cocktails to wash it all down.

We'll be back and we'll also share one of their main dishes next time.
Tried it before the match yesterday and agree about it being excellent, we got a tiffin, which reminds me of a thali, a taste of a few main dishes which comes with rice. We got the non veg tiffin and had a brilliant garlicky ginger chicken dish which was really well balanced flavour wise, a dhal dish which was again perfectly balanced spice wise and a lamb curry that was made with a lamb mince which my wife was raving over, we got another Chicken dish whose name escapes me but the tamarind water bombs where spectacular. rare to find an Indian in Liverpool where flavour and subtlety triumphs over quantity and going home too stuffed ;)  One problem I can foresee is that with the menu being quite small I can see myself soon getting through it on subsequent visits and wanting to taste new dishes. My wife had a glass of wine and I had a cup of tea and the bill was a pleasant surprise at £28. Will be boring everyone about this place and can see me popping in regularly when in town.

Tried Jamie Olivers on Monday afternoon for a late lunch\early tea. Everywhere was chocker around there - Byron, Salthouse and Browns so plumped for Olivers as it was only place that could seat us in the next 15 minutes.

The food was nice, only had main meal - Osso Bucco for me - which was good - although very small portions. Meat was tremendous just not enough of it. Bird had carbonara - good sized portion. Followed up with chocolate brownie and lemon merigune cheesecake. £50 all in as they forgot one round of drinks.

Wouldnt rush back but was decent enough. 2 complaints - they said it would be a twenty minute wait - when were seated it was upstairs and dead - so not sure what the delay was and second it was roasting in there. Not sure its like that all the time. I could complain about the people next to us talking dead loud and generally being knobheads but not really restaurant fault but could have seated us elsewhere - should have asked to move really but it would have looked pretty pointed to the people

... but the tamarind water bombs where spectacular. rare to find an Indian in Liverpool where flavour and subtlety triumphs over quantity and going home too stuffed ;)

Went in a few weeks back and I third this, they're a great little starter. The yoghurt ones were nowhere near as good. Also had the veg. tiffin, which was definitely enough to fill me up after a couple of shared starters. Staff are really friendly, I like the way you can share the food. It's another nice relaxed spot on Bold Street. I will definitely be going back.

Bit of a random one but does anyone know a Russian restaurant in Liverpool as it looks like St Petersburg has closed. Just looking somewhere different to go for my birthday. If there isn't one will probably try smugglers cove or Mowgli
