ok that seems to be the job

now what else would a budding macolite need to get up and running, codecs, programs apps etc
I mentioned a few here:
http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=90028.msg1575768#msg1575768

Desktop Manager is cool. It gives you multiple desktops like on Linux.
http://desktopmanager.berlios.de/ (Berlios is down at the mo')

If you install Fink, you can install hundreds of BSD/Linux apps on your OS X (mostly CLI stuff, including nmap and other interesting stuff).

Transmission is shaping up into a sweet BitTorrent client.

how the fuck do you rename a desktop icon

click on the name twice, slowly. (ie, not fast enough to launch it) and then type the new name.

Or, select the icon, hit apple-i (get info) and type in the new name.

Just select the item you want to rename. Then when it is selected just click once on the name and type the new name in. It's simple enough.

At least it's not as obtuse as the PC's method. Right-click- Rename, who'd ever think of doing that?

You can use the click... *pause*... click method on the PC as well. If you're a total spanner.

Ha-ha! You CAN right-click: then click Get Info and you'll see Name and Extension. Then you can rename to something like I_Love_My_Mac or whatever you choose.  :wave

That's a pretty slow way to do it though. Just click once on the selected item, that's pretty easy.

How often have you got to rename a file, not that often that any of this is a big deal.

But you have to select the thing in the first place, then pause so you don't trigger a double-click, then click again.

Can't you just name the file correctly when you save it?

The only files I rename are my nds roms. That is because the people that create them are c*nts

only if you double click the name. I click the icon then the name which means you can do it as fast as you like. The item you want to rename is normally selected anyway, after you've opened it or moved it into a file, so it works out at just one click.

Even two clicks is as fast as right clicking and finding/clicking rename.

This is the smallest point I think I've ever argued over.
