Watched Nope last night which I had heard good things about. But I didn't get it at all. It wasn't remotely scary or exciting, especially the second half which was just tedious and drawn out.
Some lovely cinematography and some original ideas, but it was a bit of a disappointment overall.

Finally seen Past Lives today, what a film! Definitely one of the best of the year so far.

Poirot - decent enough - I won't post anything in here (spoilers)

A decent enough detectively romp.

Asteroid City.

Definitely my favorite of Anderson's last three movies, but still something is just not clicking for me with his films ever since Budapest. I don't know if it's just that I got bored with his style, or something to do with the themes, but it's been very difficult for me to connect emotionally with his latest films. I have heard this complaint about his earlier films too, that they are too cold and detached, but I never had trouble connecting with any of them, and other than Djarleeing (which I liked), I loved them all.

That being said, I did enjoy Asteroid City, but didn't love it. Although I do have an urge to rewatch, which I didn't with the French Dispatch or Isle of Dogs. So maybe I will get there eventually.

Another shout out for Past Lives.

Absolutely sublime film - best I've seen in years.

Only just realised that the female lead also plays Stella in The Morning Show. She's going places that girl.

The Royal Hotel.

Looks interesting, i love those Outback Aussie films, they always have a underlying anxiety to them.

Watched 'The outfit' last night on Sky movies. Brilliant film. The whole of the movie pretty much takes place in a tailors shop in post war Chicago, & I don't think there's any more than 8 actors in the whole film. It's a gripping, tense, film that has you on the edge of your seat at times, & has a massive twist at the end.

I think Isle of Dogs is quite comfortably his weaksest film tbf. I liked Asteroid City but I agree it's his most impenetrable film. Definitely get the sense it would benefit from repeat viewings.

Only just realised that the female lead also plays Stella in The Morning Show. She's going places that girl.

I liked Past Lives too. Very well observed.

One tiny gripe for me was the fact that the main character was so obviously a stand-in for the director herself, and it's just slightly sad to think the only young filmmakers who might have a real chance of getting films made are the sons and daughters of wealthy parents - particularly ones from vague "artist" backgrounds, especially considering that for all the very worthy films made there are very few genuinely unique voices out there atm.

Anyway, a bit of a rant that Past Lives didn't necessarily deserve to be on the end of (and I honestly did really like the film) and probably a discussion for another thread/day but it did make me think.

A Million Miles Away was a really lovely little movie.  Nice to watch something like that every now and then, even if it was a little ham-fisted in parts.

Just watched a classic that truly lives up to the title. Jack Clayton's Room at the Top (1959), the sultry tale of a working-class wannabee social-climber named Joe Lampton who moves from his own small industrial Yorkshire town to another, slightly more affluent Yorkshire town in an attempt to better himself.

He begins affairs with two very different women, both of whom reflect two different sides of Joe and both of whom offer very different possibilities. The first is the beautiful daughter of his boss, the wealthiest man in town. The other is a married French woman, ten years Joe's senior and the only person in town Joe seems himself in.

Its portrayal of the North was very nuanced for its time. Generally considered one of the earlier and better of the British New Wave. The final moments weirdly reminded me of The Graduate.

Great film. He had a fantastic run between this, The Innocents and The Pumpkin Eater

I thought it was decent enough and nice to see a non-white American super hero film for a change.

I do wonder at people going to watch a Superhero films expecting it to eclipse films like 1984, War and Peace and the other classics of the cinema.

Have any of you seen the latest Pablo Larrain film, El Conde? The premise is simple; centre's on Augusto Pinochet who is not dead but an aged vampire. After living 250 years in this world, he has decided to die once and for all.

I like Larrain's work, this just seems weird, in a good way, I hope.

Saw Ballywalter at the weekend - had to travel into central London to see it, as only a few Picturehouses are showing it.

But loved it. Really charming and funny.

The lead actor was brilliant and Patrick Kielty making his movie debut.

Bottoms. The most fun I've had watching a film this year. Think Heathers, Mean Girls and Fight Club. About two femcels that start a "self defence" club, to get laid. Brilliant high school film.

Boiling Point: Fucking excellent. Graham was so very good in this. I work in the hospitality industry as a general manager so I couldn't take my eyes off it. One shot too. Wow.

The original 20-minute short from 2019 was on BBC last night.  I recorded it.  Will watch it later

The TV series adaptation also starts very soon I think.

I suppose it was a decent visual experience in the cinema. That wasn't the problem. The film was the problem. I like popcorn films, this though was just an elongated version of Ripley and Newt with dinosaurs. The dinosaurs were good, other than them,  not for me.
