So, after the kerfuffle a little earlier in this thread about The Thing (2011 prequel), I decided to give it a go, and I did so going into it with basement expectation. Well, those basement expectations seemed to be a little bit harsh, that is until it was that the more I watched, the more I wished I didn't. It didn't just hit basement for me, it actually tunnelled right through the fucking foundations and into another dimension. Really, I can't fathom or explain just how badly the writers and directors managed to fuck this film up. It felt as if it was written by a schoolboy fan of Carpenters 1982 vision. In fact everything about it was schoolboy, and vision is something which it lacked, which is ironic given that they seemed to have just used Carpenters film as a template from start to finish. Everything felt so rushed. It felt as if I'd put the 1982 version in the DVD and pressed skip chapter every 30 seconds, such was the horrible pacing of events of the story, or lack of therein. You're just bashed over the head from the get go. There is no slow build up, and as such absolutely zero tension resulting in it, which was Carpenters main vehicle that made his version so bloody good. I could write an entire essay as to why I felt it was such an abysmal attempt, but I won't bother. It's simply not worth my time. The joke of it all is that it shares the name of a film which I regard as one of the best of all time. If I had a top 5 list of my all time favourite films, Carpenters The Thing would be in it with no discernible order given. So in light of that, this so called sequel/prequel is nothing but a cheap imitation and an abomination. A bit like the film's subject matter. How's that for irony?
