I'm listening to the Wanton song off of Physical Graffiti right now so I'll say that.
"Since the beginning of the world you have fought against our gentle power with your coarse weakness; and when you triumph over us for an hour, you croak and clamour merrily like the frogs of the water. And when we conquer you and subdue you for an age, we remain as silent giants."

The intro to 'Ain't talkin' 'bout love' by Van Halen, and Bowies 'Rebel' rebel' often get overlooked in these discussionsl.  *rocks*

Oh the heavy water how it enfolds. The salt, the spray, the gorgeous undertow.

All so preditable.

The best guitar riff is difficult to think of. But, If you listen to Joe Satriani(Instrumentalist) you will probably think that hes the best guitarist ever, with the best riffs.

Joe Satriani.  :lmao

He isn't fit to string Eddie Van Halen's guitar.

OHH

i used to think that aswell before i listened to the guy actually play, he is awesome. Eddie van Halen has had more commerical success but Satch is the far better guitarist and a real cool bloke into the bargain.

The best rock riff of all time there isnt any one but here are some classics

Sweet child of mine ....GnR
Enter Sandman .....Metalica
Stairway to Heaven ....Led Aep
Rock and Roll ....Led Zep
Voodoo Childe .....Hendrix
Layla    ....Clapton
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama

the list is possibly endless every one has a different take on whats the "best"

Followed by some sweep picking.

Arthur Louis, just about anything he does on a guitar should be made illegal

Or

Santana in Smooth, he does a superb bit.
It looks to me as if we have signed another 'average' player. I'll hold back my complete opinion until I see the lad play

Layla?  ;D

Hendrix on Star Star Bangled banner.
Thurston Moore or Lee Ronaldo often deliver, as do Spinal Tap.
Butthole Surfers immediately come to mind too - damn, in the mood for some Buttholes now... (and I don't mean that to be nudge nudge, nudge nudge.)

A riff can be wanky tho when it's long and drawn out.. its the short ones which gets the goose bumps up and running but I could be here for years listing them. Or at least trying to remember them.

I cant believe in 20 posts noone has said "Stairway to Heaven , Led Zepplin".

Not that its the best but i would have thought it would have been a much more popular choice.

And again, its in A minor. As is Layla.

Nuno - Play With Me

Nobody mention Santana yet either considering the Gallaghers were mentioned at the start its a bit of a crime!

Satriani is a better guitar player than EVH, Vai pushes him close (Pupil/Master) but my mate who can't even make toast could burn the lot of em in a play off - Shame he's such an egotistical cock sucker he'll never get a deal, but the boy can play.

Steve Vai played the guitar for Ralph Machio and the Devils kid in that film, so it will be a Vai riff.

alot of people seem to be confused as to what a riff is on this thread but for me

Satisfaction - stones
overdose - AC/DC
Taxman - Beatles
four sticks - led zeppelin
sweet leaf - sabbath (or sweat loaf - butthole surfers)
in n out of grace - mudhoney

are a few that spring to mind...
