It was on cable here just last weekend. Watched it for the first time and really enjoyed it. Could have had a stronger finish.

Also squeezed in a viewing of Lawrence of Arabia. Epic story.

I'd add to my list Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Superb casting and style.
And all the world is football shaped, It's just for me to kick in space. And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste.

Deadmans Shoes is brilliant.

Saw a clip of this on my Facebook feed earlier. It does look gritty.

I knew about the film but never got around to watching it.

One question.  Are the scenes of abuse to the main characters brother really bad?  I try to avoid that stuff these days.  Not that I am a victim or anything (thankfully), its just something I find hard to watch nowadays.

It's very hard to give you pointers as I think it would ruin the film, I didn't find anything particularly shocking though mainly because of the order of events.

Five Scouse films? I did try to include only one of the film of Terence Davies. I failed. The man is a genius of film making. The fact he's from Liverpool and is one of the greatest directors to come from this country is a thing of great pride for Scousers, or should be.

Local Hero is one of the greatest films to be made in this or any other country. Shirley Valentine, not so much.

Local Hero drew upon those Ealing films we all loved as kids.

Love Local Hero. Definitely a contender.

Also love Shirley Valentine but it’s a film of a play so feels like it doesn’t really count. Likewise Educating Rita.

Indeed it was. Bernard Hill and Tom Conte are great but Pauline Collins is by far the best thing about the film. She’s brilliant. Would have loved to see her in the stage production.

I thought of In The Loop but to be honest, I think it pails a bit in comparison to The Thick of It and decided one Ianucci film was enough!

A couple of other candidates that haven't been mentioned yet...

Excalibur - probably my favourite film growing up. It's an unholy mess and the dialogue is atrocious but it has some great set pieces and looks fantastic. Nicol Williamson is brilliant as Merlin. Probably the best take on the Arthurian legend on screen.

Also stars Helen Mirren, which got me thinking about other films she has been in...

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover is another great one.

O Lucky Man! - the follow-up to If...

The Long Good Friday has already been mentioned.

Excalibur is brilliant viewing, if as, you rightly say, it isn't a classic. Having only known Nicol Williamson from a lacklustre Columbo episode beforehand, I was like...wow, he's amazing. Would have loved to have seen him on stage.

Those two are great films.

The soundtrack is another part of Excalibur that really added to the story.  Peter Greenaway...just a really good director. The scene were "that meal" is served was beautiful.
