I don’t know if the word overrated is the right one on this case, but I’ve never really got more joy out of Michael Haneke films. He has made some films I greatly admire, especially Caché and The White Ribbon, but none I loved. There’s something about his films that just leave me out cold.

Yeah, Soundgarden was the best of the grunge pack - unless you wade outside Seattle and count Smashing Pumpkins, who were also great. Alice in Chains also quality.

My local café had Pearl Jam on their playlist recently and I was reminded that their music was actually rather good, nice guitar solos. I never liked Vedder's vocals, always dragged it down for me. With a different singer I might have been a proper fan; as it was, I kinda liked their first 3 albums.

Nitpicking aside, it was pretty cool that hard, crunching guitar rock was popular there for a while. Not like whatever shite the kids are listening to now - all blends into one pile of pap for the last 20 years, AFAIC.

I used to love them but something very irritating to me right now. I appreciate the skill and expression but much prefer guitars to be part of a background, or well like riffs and that, than jizzing all over my face if you'll excuse that expression. I think acoustic sounds nice actually, just something about electric ones that does nothing for me and irritates a little

I get what you're saying. I prefer guitar "leads" over guitar "solos", if you know what I mean. I don't know if there's any technical difference between the terms, but I am referring to a guitar part that leads the music into different tempos and melodic phases, rather than just a guitarist shredding all virtuoso-like over a stock backing riff. A great example of the leads I enjoy is Emperor's "With Strength I Burn" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLrTnb5EPUA) which has a couple of short, unflashy but effective leads introducing and closing the coda from 4:47 onwards (this music obviously won't appeal to many and the production is chaotic to say the least!). No need to noodle for 5 minutes, just carry the song where it needs to go.

Well i'm a Guitar player myself and i kinda agree with you. I fucking hate those long, pointless wanky guitar solo's performed by egotistical narcissists more interested in their own brilliance than that of the song they're supposed to be serving. Jimmy (sloppy as shit) Page, Richie Blackmore, all the prog guys save for maybe Robert Fripp, all the boring blues wankers like Clapton, Beck etc basically almost anyone on those greatest guitar player lists you see.

Then again there are some brilliantly underrated guitarists out there who know what to play and when to play it, George Harrison is one example, Dave Gregory from XTC is another but then i don't think you're talking about players like that.

Anyway my overrated list is as follows Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Smiths, The Doors...in fact most of the "classic rock" canon does absolutely nothing for me, truly great pop music kicks the shit out of rock music. I'll take The Kinks, The Beatles, The Zombies, ELO, Abba, 10cc, Sparks, XTC, Blondie, Tears For Fears, Pulp over any of the supposed classic rock bands.
