'Conspiracy theories' have always run across a wide spectrum of reality, though. I agree that many, the most extreme, are fruit-loop paranoia on steroids. But many others are less implausible and have elements of truth within them. Some big exposés began life as 'conspiracy theories'.

It's not helpful group all 'conspiracy theories' in with the most nutty ones. That just shuts down debate about potential scandals, and helps governments and corporations dismiss genuine concerns as 'conspiracy theories'.

The 'elements of truth' in conspiracy theories are usually put there deliberately, in order to draw people in and convince them that there 'must be something in it'.

a good illustration of what real conspiracies are and what conspiracy theories are and how further detached from reality they prove to be - and often moving further and further right to anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia/transphobia.

As we know, conspiracy theories abound on both sides of the political spectrum - I know plenty of whackos who are Anti-Vax and are further left than most people on here. And one thing most far right and far left have in common, and in abundance, is a disarmingly intense hatred of Jewish people.

Anyone who believes this government could be behind some grand plan to vaccinate, track, infect or in any other way 'control' the population for some nefarious reason when they can't even hide a Christmas do from the general public, they need to take a long hard look at themselves.

Conspiracy is what is meant to happen.
That is what a committee is for.
Your local bowling club is askew with conspiracies.

My opinion, nobody gives a fuck what is going on, but the same people are picking up the coins at the end of the carnage.

And where's the money going through, the banks, it's being laundered, how, they have regulations, so how.
Cos that's what a bank started as, avail indeed, money launderers, that's their major purpose.
How else does it work?

But generally I have given up on you lot.
By the way, you all fucked off out the Venezuela thread a couple of years ago when the Branson Concert Save Venezuela Post was put up. Moved on to other things. Again.

Yeah in America they have taken control of the Republican party calling all old Republican's RINOs (Republican In Name Only) - which is preposterous as they don't have much of the main ideology or beliefs of traditional conservatives, certainly economically. They're populists. Clothing themselves in these political movements is just a tacit way to portray their extremely racist, xenophobic views as more considered rather than reactionary out-dated and often pretty terrifying prescriptions for change.

It’s interesting. Lots of anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists, who also post stuff claiming Gates is the anti-Christ, etc. will use material online that’s been created by far right conspiracy camps. The result is that people like Alex Jones, Victor Davis Hanson and other Trump acolytes, find themselves being quoted by folk who politically support the far left in the U.K.

It’s called ‘horseshoe theory’.

A fair number of the neocons used to be fringe left as well. It's as though they need to believe something, and if their original beliefs don't work out, they jump onto the opposite wing to find something to equally fervently believe in. I think I'm pretty much the definition of a moderate, with a belief in process and willing to fudge quite a bit to make the process work.

Very interesting.

strongly recommend these two QAnon podcasts if of interest:

QAnon Anonymous: especially the 'field' episodes where they visit QAnon conferences etc
QClearance

Some more broader discussion over conspiracy theories vs real conspiracy etc

Can I just say I found the spread and use of the conspiracy interesting (equally alarming and frightening as well) not the actual conspiracies themselves?
i dont want mods pointing out my learning difficulties....

The BBC thing starts with an interesting parallel: the rise of the witch-hunts that plagued the middle ages, aided by the invention of the printing press, conspiracy nonsense spread by the new technology with wide reaching terrible consequences for the people of the time.
Now we have the internet which is way more potent.

there's a lot of people who find this stuff interesting (versus just believing in them) - in fact there are dozens (maybe hundreds?) of professionals who research conspiracy theories now. i follow a lot on twitter and listen to a lot of their podcasts as it directly feeds into politics and communities.

i also think if you're gen z or a millenial you probably went through a phase of watching conspiracy videos on youtube which probably adds a layer of interest to things, even if it's from a conspiracy realism angle.

That's an interesting point about the printing press. It was the driving force behind the Reformation and the political and religious changes it brought about but King James's book, Daemonolgie, lead to the witch hunts.

You could argue that the printing press was the Tudor and Jacobean social media although government's went to great lengths to ensure censorship.

The idea that the vaccine is for surveillance is preposterous. There are much easier and cheaper ways to spy on the plebs. And face masks are for control, yet they limit the ability to use facial recognition. This plandemic wasn’t very well planned.

The other vaccine thing I heard recently was that the elites want to use it to reduce the global population. One sign that this is balls is that they didn’t put a plan in place to donate these killer vaccines to poor countries.

Most conspiracies fall apart with very little prodding.

Some spaff in the Telegraph is now pushing one that claims that partygate was a plot concocted by remainers  to take out Johnson in revenge for brexit 🤔

It wasn't a mod.
