If we are not just talking about players then i have to say Herr Klopp is number 1 for me. From tracking the plane and reading how excited everybody was in this forum just gave a me much needed boost at the time, never really got a lot of work done done during those couple of days.

Second for me is Collymore, he was probably the most coveted (English) player at that time, the goal he scored on his debut just added to the excitement for me and i really thought that he would go and and become a club legend.

Close third for me is the Return of God, although i thought deep down he wouldn't be the same player he was the buzz i got when i found out he was returning was incredible.

1 Rafa.

2 Dalglish return.

3 Fowler return.

No expectations on the second two. Just giddy as a schoolgirl.

I'm guessing you were excited about seeing Ray Kennedy play up front? Never really worked, but it's funny how things work out isn't it.

Well yes and of course he scored in his first game iirc but thankfully the genius that was Bob Paisley spotted just how much more he could get out of him in midfield. The rest as they say is history.

A lot of people mentioning Dalglish here, from someone younger, why was this? Had many people seen him play already? What was the thoughts when he had signed?

Living in Scotland I had the good/mis fortune to see him playing against Hearts and on TV against others. He was always magnificent (unfortunately). I only started going to Liverpool games (infrequently) in 75 but by 77 I was going to most home and some away games. Obviously you never know exactly how it will turn out but I really was thrilled we'd signed him and that it got him out of Scotland was a bonus.

For me - and yes I am that old  :)

1. Kenny Dalglish - after Kevin Keegan left I wondered how we would replace him -along came KD the same age as KK and Liverpool made a £60,000 profit - ching ching!

2. Virgil van Dijk - We had needed a strong dominate centre back for a while and Rodgers made a mistake not buying one.

3. John Barnes - He was probably the most skilful Liverpool player ever.  His Achilles tendon injury in 1992 changed his game and he was never the same player again.

Van Dijk
Torres
Keita

First two have proven to be amazing for us.

I have faith Keita will be one of the best midfielders in the league, once he gets some rhythm.
Every time I watch him, I'm impressed by his ball control. His touch, vision and workrate are showing. He's definitely got the "pass and move" ingrained in him.

The Rafa one’s a good shout. I remember watching his Valencia team at Anfield, one of the best displays i’ve seen there to this day! When he signed I had the idea in my head he’ll be bringing Aimer, Baraja and Vicente with him.

I'm most excited about players I'm familiar with and admire. You might say I've "scouted" these players in my own mind because they were just brilliant, or they offered something different or they suited our style of play:

1. Luis Suarez - he was a already a great player when we signed him and I knew he would only improve. It was surprising there weren't more big teams after him even considering the disciplinary problems. We were flush with cash following the Torres sale and Suarez was obviously keen to jump ship at the time. It was destiny.

2. Fabinho - VVD & Allison signings may have had a bigger impact on the squad but I was more excited when we signed Fabinho. It felt like the squad had lacked a genuine wrecking ball in midfield for some time. We also signed him from Monaco for a pretty hefty (but fair) fee early on in the transfer window and it felt like we were just swinging our dicks around in the air like they were lassos.

3. Timo Werner - Do they have to be actual signings? Fingers crossed this one isn't dead yet...  :lickin

Ian Rush, can remember an 8 year old me kicking the ball around the garden for about 3 hours after hearing on the Rushie was coming home on the news. He went onto become our all time highest goal scorer with 346 goals surpassing Roger Hunt.

Stan Collymore, was away with school in Snowdon for the weekend. I got word that we’d signed Collymore on the Saturday night and that he’d turned down more money from Everton. I firmly believed this would signal the return of the league title to Anfield, but we’d have to wait a little while longer. Collymore struck a fantastic partnership with Robbie Fowler during his 1st season with us and left an indelible mark in Premier League history in the 4-3 win against Newcastle at Anfield. But his time at the club ultimately proved a false dawn as the league title during both of Collymore’s seasons with us ended up down the M62.

Robbie Fowler, I had bittersweet memories of 2001. We’d won the treble and made the Champions League but I’d lost my job and my Nan that year then Fowler went. I think Fowler had shown with his hat trick at Filbert Street not long before he left and at his time at Leeds that he still knew where the back of the net was. I felt we were lightweight up front in 2005/6 and remarked to my mate in the car back from Old Trafford that given the chance I’d bring him back. 5 days later, I’d been out on all night session and was just about to finish work, when I got a text saying he’s signed. Rang my mate to ask who and he said Robbie Fowler. I couldn’t believe it and checked on teletext, suddenly pandemonium and was phone was going 9 to the dozen with calls about Fowler coming back. Queue another night on the ale, I didn’t have a high expectation this time around. I was just pleased he’d come back and we’d get the opportunity to say goodbye. The ovation Robbie got when he came out to warm up with Xabi Alonso that night against Birmingham was fantastic, it’s just a shame he had his late winner chalked out.

That’s a decent shout. Certainly wouldn’t put him in my top 3, but I had high hopes for that lad when he joined. That signing fooled most people.

was at that game with my dad, thought we would get revenge from the 2-0 drubbing at the mestalla.  Sadly they schooled us, never ever saw Owen so ineffective, a proper Rafa performance. Said to my dad,  this team of Rafa's will win the CL,   they didn't that year but his team did get their hands on the trophy 3 years later in 2005.n So I was nearly right.

  • Stan Collymore. Our record signing. The lad had absolutely everything. Pace, physicality, technical skills, positional mastery and an eye for goal. His link up with Fowler should have become the stuff of legends. On reflection you can't blame him for it not happening. Oh what might have been.
  • Marcus Babbel. From under the nose of United and from out of nowhere we signed one of the best players in the world. He was pure class and still is in my all time best Liverpool team.
  • Virgil van Dijk. The whole of the football world had been watching his progression for a good five years and we beat the moneybags competition and signed a player that would be instrumental in us transitioning from also rans to the best in the world.

1. Suarez; Thought he was world class. But never imagined he would be as good as he turned out to be.
2. Allison; Genuinely thought we were going into the season with yet another rendition of decent-yet-not-very-good ft.Mignolet/Karius/Ward.
3. Cisse; I remember being so hyped for this lad after Houllier seemingly wanted him for years, thought he would be our Henry.

I will probably never again be excited for a singing as I was for Harry Kewell. Partly because of my age at the time but also we got him at a time where we were probably the 3rd or 4th best team in the league, and no mistakes about it Kewell was a talent who should have been playing for the top team in the league or Europe.

I still remember him scoring one of the best volleys I’ve seen against Arsenal the season before, he was a special special player and when we got him ahead of United Arsenal and co I thought it was the start of something great.

Next would be Torres all the hype about him at Atletico, again another player I expected to go to United, couldn’t quite believe he came here in the end.

Probably VVD after that less excitement, just an assurance knowing that we had signed the best centre back in the world, and I had no qualms about that whatsoever, even at Southampton you could see he was as close to a perfect cb as this league has ever seen.

I was away with an ex in Germany and the game wasn't on the telly - our kid text me and said be glad you aren't seeing this as we are getting destroyed. He was the same as Klopp to me, I admired his teams, loved their football but thought we had no chance getting him. Glad I was wrong.

1) Virgil - Knew we were getting a colossus and knew he would make an instant impact on our team, just didn't realize HOW good and HOW big of an impact he would make. What a signing, and for it to happen right around Christmas was the cherry on top!

2) Naby - Was convinced he was going to just absolutely take our midfield to the next level. Injuries have obviously been the main drawback with him but it's been pretty disappointing considering how much we paid for him. Hopefully he kicks on during this last quarter of the season.

3) Mamadou Sakho  - Was giddy about us signing a player from PSG who was a regular in their side, felt like a total coup. Remember the TV showing him in the stands watching a game early on in the season, either right when we were seriously linked to him or right when it came out we were signing him.

--VVD, signing the very best. Amazing

--Alisson, see VVD.

Also, remember thinking Suarez was the best we'd signed since Kenny.

Didn't realise Managers were included otherwise I'd tend to agree.  As a kid I was excited about Rush coming back.  Fowler was another level. I was at the Birmingham game and him coming on actually got the Centenary on their feet for a change. Only ruined for me by the offside and the fact a mate had brought a Brum fan on our coach and we only knew when he was in the ground.
