Hahaha. 3 in 4 balls.

Five-fer on debut and onto the honours board straight away.

I donít think 88 is the West Indies favourite number right now.

Jimmy did that on his debut at Lords.  It'll be a huge disappointment if Atkinson doesn't get at least 600+ test wickets now.

That's the first time an England bowler has taken 7 wickets on debut since January.

Great for England and Atkinson but Test cricket would be in a much better state with a good West Undies side. Sadly I think that's way off

Not seen an England seamer look this hood on day-boo since Neil Mallender!

Actually theyíve just brought up a graphic of best figures on debut. Dominic Cork took 7 v the Windies in 1995, I remember my English teacher keeping us updated with that one. :D That was 4th innings if the match.

Also on the list was James Kirtley against South Africa in 2003. I remember that, we won a low scoring thriller. Did he have a slightly dodgy wrist action? Or was he just injured a lot? His Test career was pretty short.

The problem is that the richer nations know that they need to spend more money on something that will make their teams more likely to lose. They're more interested in preserving the status quo.

Yeah, not to take away from Atkinson or this performance in general but this is barely a West Indies B team. Sad really.

Is that a comment on their general quality or are a lot of players missing from their test squad for this series?

I'm sure there will be a more obvious lbw this summer. but I doubt there'll be 2 of them.

Coming back from the golf today I had Test Match Special on during what seemed to be a delay in play. They were talking about how skilful and talented Anderson is in being able to assess the conditions quickly and adapt accordingly, almost instinctively. Michael Vaughan said that he is that good at it he virtually sets his own field and almost dictates to the captain what field he wants, and Vaughan seemed quite happy with it.

They then turn to Cook and asked about his experience of captaining him and he mentioned a time when Anderson said to him within 3 overs to take the slips out, Cook effectively blanks him by the sound of it and mentions that the 'stats' didn't back it up - I assume he was thinking to himself! It then sounded like it was 30 overs before he acted.

The conversation pretty much confirmed my assessment of him as a captain in that he was very much a 'textbook' captain relying far too much on statistics and preset plans rather than instinct and being adaptable to the game situation and worst of all not trusting the judgement of his bowlers. Completely the opposition to Vaughan and now Stokes, just think of how many more wickets Anderson would have had if he'd had a more positive captain backing him during those years. Well actually the Anderson 'stats' since Stokes took charge speak for themselves.

Healthy lead already, inexperienced opposition, plenty of time to bat on a pitch that's quite slow.  Should be set up to bat sensibly and put the West Indies out of the game.

So they're going to "baz-ball" it and be all out with lead of about 150, aren't they?

Slow outfield so not getting as many boundaries as they'd like by the look of it. They'll have to be hitting more sixes!

the red stuff is all well and good, and it's a great cause obviously, but it just always seems a little half-arsed.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't bankrupt anyone to have some red bails/sponsor things on the stumps (you could even auction them off afterwards) or to have the led sponsor boards around the playing area all in red for a day as well. fuck the sponsor colours off for a day like they do with the sponsor thing on the outfield and on the shirts.

Test cricket for you.

Yesterday Atkinson takes a wicket with his second ball. 3 wickets in 4 later on. Gets on the honours board at Lords' and ends up with the 2nd best figures for England on debut.

Today.  Out first ball he faced in test cricket.
