They should use the 'old method' for making the Duke red ball. This one sucks.

Might as well as use Kookaburra for future matches till they sort this out.

This is basically still the old method isn't it, but the lack of production during covid meant that they haven't been allowed to mature in a warehouse as they usually would be in normal years. You'd assume that this entire season's batch of balls is going to suffer from these issues unless they can actually change to a new process.

Phenomenal innings
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

I've seen various explanations for the inadequacy of this particular batch. New owner and maybe lower standards. Workers laid off and less quality assurance. Materials not seasoned for as long. Don't know what the truth is.

So essentially these haven't been 'cured'.

I read somewhere that the process for stitching the leather is a bit different now, leading to the issues with shape.

Never ever seen as many balls being changed in 3 decades of watching test cricket. Must be a really bad batch.

Interesting to see how the momentum changed between him and Bairstow, the latter had caught up and overtaken Root's score, but then Root has pushed on and easily got to his century first.

Thing is... when they change a ball, aren't those balls quite old anyway? I imagine them sitting in boxes in a cupboard marked 1-10 overs, 11-20 etc or something and may have been sitting there a while?

Root is a phenom these days. Makes life easier for his teammates too because he doesn't eat up the strike for overs on end. Constantly turning the end over.

He's got a very odd, very clear bitterness towards anything English. His antics during the Euros were an absolute embarrassment, and not much better here.

He's ridiculous. Absolutely boss. His innings at Lord's will be the most important of the summer. Retrospectively might look back on it with more significance in years to come

Easy to forget with England's form before this summer in Root, Broad and Anderson we've watched 3 of the best ever England have had

Neither of them has taken any major risks, just great test match batting.

Bairstow has been incredibly mature in his shot selection, which shows you how he has progressed.

Some of this more aggressive approach has seen some players coming out and playing recklessly, but this pair have been both sensible and ruthless today.

This pattern of chasing down such large totals in the 4th innings really is ludicrous. Ok fair enough they're not exactly your stereotypical day 5 pitches but still.
