I think there have only even two official gates over 61,000 at Anfield. The record, which Rob posted earlier, was v Wolves in the cup in 1952. Can anyone guess the team for the other one (also in the FA Cup)?
I actually had to Google that, and the answer was very surprising.

Anfield is what makes us unique but it's held us back a bit as well over the years. First 60k home crowd for generations is mad for one of the biggest clubs. Last 20 years we'd have got 70k regularly and got more of the next generation in. If we'd have left though the capacity wasn't going to be huge at Stanley Park or in another acceptable location.

We've done well with these two stands after the botched and cheap job in the 90s   Should have a plan at least for the other two stands.

We were nowhere close to selling out early group games in the CL in 2004. ;)

Huddersfield?

Ha ha! Sadly not.

This team makes no sense at all, but there again....it makes sense of a kind.

And? Could have sold 10s of thousands of extra season tickets easily.

There was plenty of empty seats at various Man United cup games too back then. The ticket operation at Anfield was amateur in the 2000s.

So is the whole Upper stand open then? I had thought it was only some of the hospo opening but it looks complete (save for the small end segment at the end of the lower stand).

The point is 33,517 of us were at the Monaco game.

People claim that era was better for tickets as all you had to do was either go to ground or send a cheque in.

I went to all six homes and come the final walked up to the ground. Picked my spec in Istanbul and walked away with a €20 ticket.

Sat in the new ARE yesterday.  Great view and much more shoulder room than the Kop which is really tight.  Decent atmosphere and singing as well.

Was very early to my seat and there were some huge drips of water coming down from the roof to about 15 rows back from the goal though.  Anyone else notice that?

Concourse doesn't seem to be any better than the old LA, absolutely rammed at HT, are they doing more work to extend it out at all? It feels like the wall with the concessions on needs taking out or something! I expected it to be really spacious.

It wasn't the ticket office, it was that no-one wanted to go. The ST waiting list only exploded when the fan cards came in, as there was a tick box to be added to the ST list, I wrote in to the club in 2003 and I was about 8400 on the list back then. Istanbul brought hundreds of thousands out of woodwork, I noticed loads of newbies who'd never been there appearing in 05/06, I suddenly started getting asked "which one is the Main Stand, which one is the Anfield Road" by people in their late 30's and 40's . . Easter 2004 I couldn't give away 3 tickets for the Charlton game and tickets were easy to come by.

All things considered, to reach 61K capacity whilst staying at our spiritual home and having minimal long-term debt to service is a great achievement to the club and testament to FSG. Clearly it took longer than anyone would have wished but we got there in the end and the final result looks fantastic.

Staying at Anfield was important, as it's an irreplaceable part of the club. United, despite having a much higher capacity, are still looking at a new stadium or another big rebuild. Partly because it's no longer the shiniest car on the drive, but also as Old Trafford simply doesn't have the allure of Anfield and that's the two things they want.

A bit like Manchester in general where they'll throw endless money at more skyscrapers and development, which we could do with more of here, but ultimately Liverpool still has the better landmarks.

The Founders Lounge is in the middle and doesn't extend the full width.

From the planning drawings it looks like there will be pitch views on the Kenny side of Brodies. The Main Stand side is blocked off by the kitchen and WCs for the upper visiting GA concourse.

I think there have only even two official gates over 61,000 at Anfield. The record, which Rob posted earlier, was v Wolves in the cup in 1952. Can anyone guess the team for the other one (also in the FA Cup)?

I posed this question but forgot to give an answer. The second highest official attendance at Anfield was in January 1934. A shade over 61,000 for the visit of....Tranmere Rovers. Clearly the greatest of the Merseyside derbies.

The stories in the Echo after the Liverpool v Wolves match by the way are of distressed supporters on the Kop and in the Annie Road who felt the thing had become dangerously over-full. One of the crush barriers at the Annie Road had badly buckled. This was just a few years after the Burnden Park disaster where 33 people had been killed on an overcrowded terrace. I think in response the club directors at Liverpool decided to reduce the capacity at Anfield - though there was no legal requirement to. People were also getting bigger of course - taller and wider - because they were Welfare State kids not Great Depression kids. The old calculations had been based on the British working class remaining malnourished and under-sized for ever.
