Surely no more of a risk than the Austrian league where we've just bought a player from?

I think this signing could actually improve them (for once) but having said that, it's a club with shite coaches at present so could go either way.

So you're comparing the peanuts we spent on a player that isn't going straight into our first team, to a player that is going to cost 60 million pounds, with tons of wages and going straight into their side?

And their fans will still whine saying they don't spend enough under their current ownership....

If the sign Fernandes, that'll be £200 million on 4 players for Solskjaer in just a few months.

The lad we purchased for a fraction of the price played very well against the best team on the planet  ;D. Bruno will improve them and he could be a very good sigining but he's what? 25 now? I don't recall him pulling up trees for the national team or in the Europa league. To be fair though I've barely watched those competitions.

I'm sure Poch wanted him at Spurs in the summer, So maybe they are preparing for sacking Ole next summer.

Usually a good indicator of someone's quality without going into the deeper analytics.

As a comparison, Minamino is basically 1 in 2 for Japan and excelled in the CL.

agreed except for international stats. 'a player of international quality' is one of the most amusing labels i hear from commentators about players who get games for liverpool.

George Caulkin has a really interesting piece on The Athletic re: how poorly run clubs end up dig a hole for themselves in January. The bit about Swansea foolishly spending four weeks chasing Gaitan and Gameiro only to panic and re-sign Ayew at inflated wages last minute is mental. Makes me wonder why more clubs don't strategize for possibile outcomes during the season as part of their summer recruitment

He was quite good in the Portugal/Netherlands game this past summer. And anyone would be better than "Jlinz" in the 10 for them. The real question is how long he would/could take to adjust to the league; not all players do.

I wasn't comparing the players, just the leagues they come from.

Plenty putting him down because it's "only the Portuguese league"

It's not the same risk. It's a riskier signing for them than it is for us, for the reasons given.

I really hope not, he's quality and will make a difference.

However he's clearly "not all there" if he signs for that lot.

What a shite article.

Quote
Manchester United have reportedly completed a deal to sign Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly in a deal worth just over £60m.

Koulibaly has also been linked with the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal , but according to reports in Italy United have swooped quickly and stolen a march on their Premier League rivals.

The 28-year-old is not expected to join until the summer, but his presence would give United a huge boost at the back, with the Senegalese international one of the most sought-after defenders in European football.

Italian journalist Fabio Santini broke the news, and speaking on the TV show Il Processo he said: "Napoli will sell Kalidou Koulibaly to Manchester United for a figure of around 70-75m euros. It seems all done.

The signing of Kalidou Koulibaly would be an exciting one for Manchester United (Image: REUTERS)

"Naturally, such a deal will be closed only in June and certainly not in January in the winter transfer window."

The signing would be the second time United have shelled out big money on a centre-back within a year, with Harry Maguire joining from Leicester City for £80m last summer.

The capture of Koulibaly is sure to be a hugely popular deal with United fans, who have been crying out for another world-class centre-back to join Maguire and help an often-leaky defence.

Koulibaly has been at Napoli since signing from Genk in 2014 and immediately established himself as an ever-present in the team, impressing in both Serie A and the Champions League for the Italian club.

He insisted last year that he was happy in Naples, however, and took to Twitter to say: "My children were born here. Here, I grew up as a man and as a football player. Here, my children and I feel at home."

But Napoli are said to be struggling financially, which may explain why they are willing to let their star player leave.

Yeah which is why much better he go to a UTD and be coached by Ole than end up at City where he could really make a difference we would need to care about.

He is a good player. However, he is having a poor season by his standards and will be 29 in June. That's a lot of money for someone that they will have to replace in another 3 years time.

Gedson Fernandes to Spurs confirmed.
Quote
Tottenham have made their first move in the January transfer window by signing Benfica’s midfielder Gedson Fernandes.

The 21-year-old has joined on an 18-month loan and there is an option for the deal to become permanent for a reported £56m.
Inter offer £8.5m to sign Tottenham's Christian Eriksen in January

Fernandes becomes the club’s first signing of the José Mourinho era and will provide vital midfield cover following a three-month lay-off for Moussa Sissoko, who has had knee surgery.

The Athletic is a bit nonplussed however.
Quote
Despite early excitement, however, he has struggled to kick on over the last 12 months. Injuries have disrupted his progress. He also lost a cheerleader in the dressing room when Vitoria was sacked last January. Successor Bruno Lage has been more sniffy about his ability: Fernandes only started three league games in the whole of 2019, and tumbled ever further down the pecking order.

It is true Lage’s system did him few favours: Benfica have been playing with two up front, meaning there were only two spots available in central midfield. Nor should the final nail in Fernandes’ coffin – this month’s arrival of Julian Weigl from Borussia Dortmund – reflect too badly on him. Of more concern to Tottenham fans will be the fact that, in the first half of this season, one of the players preferred by Lage in the Benfica engine room was Adel Taarabt — a Tottenham predecessor dubbed the “worst professional I have ever come across” and “three-stone overweight” by his former Spurs and Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp.

Indeed, for all Fernandes’ obvious potential, it is revealing that there was no real outcry at his departure. Benfica are happy to let him go; they will be even happier if Tottenham end up exercising the option to buy him for €50 million at the end of his 18-month loan spell. That would be an incredible fee to receive for an out-of-favour player. Not for nothing did Portuguese sport newspaper Record’s columnist Rui Calafate suggest that agent Jorge Mendes deserves a statue for brokering this deal.

The Athletic is a bit nonplussed however.

Some guy on Athletic's transfer podcast was saying that this deal is just there to put Fernandes in the spotlight again. Currently he is struggling to break into first team at Benfica and is behind likes of Adel Taarabat in pecking order. He said Mendes is hoping that even if he is a squad player at Spurs, a mid-table club in England, Spain or Italy will buy him afterwards.

Also is it just me or are Portuguese Teams the worst place to purchase players from. In terms of quality, the league has been no better Eredivisie over the past five years, yet any youngster that has a good half season is shopped around at ludicrous fees.

Compare Joao Felix to some one like Ziyech. Look at what both achieved at Ajax and Benfica and look at fees that clubs were willing to pay for them.
