I guess it will be away due to re-laying pitch.  Chelsea, as we are playing them again a few days later.

The Schalke friendly is at Anfield on 6th August. The pitch will be ready for the start of the season.

We always seemed to get Villa away early when they were Premier League regulars so I’m going with Watford at home followed by Villa away

Have we ever been drawn against United on the first day of the season?

Don't think so but we did get United second week of the season when Moyes was there manager.

We did, also because we weren't a 4th placed side. So there is a chance it could happen this year

That was the third week in 2013/14.  We had Stoke, Villa then United.  Sturridge scored the winner in all three 1-0 wins

Don't you all think it's a bit strange that the players will only be getting about 5/6 weeks rest at best?

I always think its better to play the stronger teams earlier in the season... as their generally strong all year whereas the lower level teams give it a bash before injuries and reality hit home. Arsenal away would be my preference

This. With the caveat that you don't want a relegation threatened team in the last few weeks of the season, ideally.

They no longer have unofficial restrictions on the Top 6 playing each other in the first game of the season. That's why Arsenal ended up playing Man City first game last season

As far as I know it was  a top 4 restriction not a top 6.

You won't find an example of two top 4 sides playing one another on the opening day in recent years.

Hopefully City have Everton away and Utd away early so them two pathetic little nothing clubs won't match fix again. (probably wouldn't make a difference anyway but it'd be nice if they at least had to earn the wins)

I'd put money on us playing City within the last 6 games of the season. Sky will have been furious there was no title decider for them to hype for weeks last season.
