Ronnie Whelan
« on: May 18, 2019, 01:43:24 pm »
I couldn’t see a thread for Ronnie, which seems ridiculous.  Granted, annoying pundit at times, sometimes attracted criticism in playing days, but what a player.  Had an unusual blend of skill and strength.  Just thought of him having seen him on the lfc Paisley programme.  It’s well known that he started as an attacking midfielder, then moved to anchor.  What I didn’t realise was, he said, he joined Liverpool “as a striker, number 10”.  Back then, you did often hear Liverpool managers saying good players can play anywhere, and you saw that with the likes of Whelan, Lawrenson and Nicol.  I think we are also seeing more of this again under Jurgen.

So Whelan had particular value for his versatility.  Scored a lot of goals, some stunning and important, in his early days, and full of energy, quality, determination and team play.  Certainly deserves a thread.

He was from before my time but I've heard a lot if comparisons between him and Hendo (a really important player who got a lot of criticism from fans who didn't see how much he did for the team)

Is this fair?
if I came home to allison in bed with my wife I'd ask him to phone Virgil to see if he wanted to pop round too.

I have every admiration for Hendo. He is probably a little more athletic than Whelan, particularly in the middle age of his career.  Whelan was originally quite an attacking but all round midfielder; more technical than Hendo and a better goal scorer.  There are similarities - especially the maturity of team sacrifice - and differences.  I think Whelan was the better overall player, but not by a lot.  I would be interested in the views of other old farts who can comment on both!

I'd say Whelan is a lot more like Gini than Hendo, if we're making that comparison. He could do a bit of it all.
Better looking than Samie.

Agree. Better long distance shooting and passing though

Scored the best OG you'll ever see in a game against United at OT. ;D

He was a fantastic player who would be a contender for a spot in midfield in an all time Liverpool Xi. Probably forgotten a little because he spent his career playing alongside Souness, Hansen, Rush, Kenny, Barnes et al. He was a goalscoring midfielder at the start of his career but sat back a bit more later on. He could shoot, dribble, pass, tackle too, the lot. Technically a better player than Henderson IMO, more like Gini, with a bit of Milner rolled in.

Scored some fantastic goals, the winner against Utd in the Milk Cup final of 83 being my favourite. I’ll try to embed a video of it

Great player, who when he broke into the first team, as a youngster, was a box to box attacking midfielder who could arrive late, get on the end of stuff and finish superbly. He scored important goals at vital times. Maybe injuries took their toll a bit, maybe he just lost a little pace, but later in his career he did become more of a sitting midfielder. Great eye for snuffing out opposition attacks and he could put his foot in with the best of them. I always thought that Ronnie put the needs of the team first and that he sacrificed his own game for the greater good of the team. You can't ask for more.

Is that the one where he lobbed Grobs from the half-way line? I thought that was the derby.

God knows what was going through his and Grobs' head that day...  :o

Just checked it out on Youtube and aye, it is funny how you remember different things. I had it in my head that it was a backpass from the half-way line for some reason.

Brilliant player.

Loved hearing his stories yesterday about when he signed & his first game selected he asked (think he was referring to Ronnie Moran) "what do you want me to do"?
Ronnie replied "we've just signed you for 750k and you're asking us what you need to do"!!
I know the fee was wrong by the way..pretty sure RW said 750k.

..and the time when we had won the league title & Moran puts a bag of medals on the table & says to the lads "If you think you have earned one of those..take one"

Pretty sure that story was about Souness, after he'd just signed.

Fantastic midfielder. Not as athletic as Henderson but a far better player with the ball. His volleyed goal against the USSR for Ireland in Euro 88 was spectacular.

Thank god you don't have to listen to him doing commentary on Liverpool games. Does coverage in Ireland for our European games. Negative doesn't quite cover it. Add Hindsight Houghton to the list as well.

Seaman did really have a tendency to get lobbed a lot; Dixon, Nayim, Ronaldinho, Miggs.
