I couldn’t see a thread for Ronnie, which seems ridiculous. Granted, annoying pundit at times, sometimes attracted criticism in playing days, but what a player. Had an unusual blend of skill and strength. Just thought of him having seen him on the lfc Paisley programme. It’s well known that he started as an attacking midfielder, then moved to anchor. What I didn’t realise was, he said, he joined Liverpool “as a striker, number 10”. Back then, you did often hear Liverpool managers saying good players can play anywhere, and you saw that with the likes of Whelan, Lawrenson and Nicol. I think we are also seeing more of this again under Jurgen.
So Whelan had particular value for his versatility. Scored a lot of goals, some stunning and important, in his early days, and full of energy, quality, determination and team play. Certainly deserves a thread.
“Whelan’s curled it!”
