For 2 seasons in the CL they absolute bossed it then sadly the vultures were swarming and it got broken apart, in 1994 they won the UEFA cup as well.

My fav non Liverpool CL winners, was in awe of that team just for the fact how many young players were in the team.

Sadly just as Ajax are putting a dent in Europe again, the team is being broken apart again in summer.

What a ridiculous academy system they have.

Like many others have said that Ajax team was a joy to behold and definitely the reason Ajax are my favourite continental European team.

I was gutted when Kluivert went to Milan and that team started to break up. I know Seedorf and Davids went the year before but Kluivert always seemed like the poster boy for that team in my eyes

Rijkaard?

Rijkaard isn't in my memories of that team. Not sure why - I'm thinking most of my memories of that Ajax team are when he was at Milan? Or because he was dirty spitting bastard? Can't remember.

They played an aggressive 3-4-3 with a diamond midfield:

They changed shape according to the phase of play, so in the final defensive phase it looked like a 4-4-1-1, with Rijkaard dropping into the backline and the two wingers dropping off into the channels.

Their shape was not as mobile as the Total Voetbal teams, as there was very little interchange of positions across the field, but because of this, they were able to move the ball rapidly with one-touch football, as everyone knew where everyone else was.

Wonderful team from a great coach. If there was no Van Gaal, there would be no Pep. Cruyff may have set the Barca playing philosophy, but Van Gaal showed them all how to train and coach.

Again, my memory can't be trusted, but Bogarde was always in my fave Ajax teams and it would be F De Boer who moved between CB and midfield.

Just looked it up and seen Rijkaard played the 95 final. I'm a bit surprised.

Although I would say you've chosen an Ajax 90s team without Seedorf. The shame   :missus

That graphic is from 2013, I believe, and I posted it on a different thread, so I re-used it to show the Ajax shape under Van Gaal ;D

Always recycle! :D

Here is the CL game between Ajax and Milan. You'll see the "Quadruple Diamond" 3-4-3 shape quite clearly - diamond at the back between the keeper, 2 & 3 and central defender; diamond between the back three and the defensive mid; diamond between the four mids; and diamond between the #10, #9, #7 and #11. Very Van Gaal.

Fascinating interview with Van Gaal here -

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/jun/03/louis-van-gaal-manchester-united--interview-buy-players-rooney-tactics-solskjaer

Bit that stood out -

Quote
I saw as Manchester United manager that the quality of the players of City, Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal was better. So what can I do? We were attacking. We were not defending and we were looking for tactical solutions adapted to the level of our players. For example we were provoking space and that was new in England. I think six months ago [Jürgen] Klopp has also seen the light because in former days he was always pressing.

Q: How do you provoke space?

I have tried because of the speed of [Anthony] Martial and [Marcus] Rashford to provoke space by not pressing immediately but to come a little back, not parking the bus, but to the middle line and then the defenders halfway in our own half. Only with AZ did I do that before, also because of the lower level of my players, and of course I adapt to the quality of my players. You have to see it. Because I didn’t have the best quality of players, they could not perform the system to attack. For example, when Liverpool have to attack constantly, they have a problem, more a problem than, for example, Manchester City.

Q: Why?

Because Salah, Firmino and Mané need a bigger space than Agüero, Sané and Sterling and also the creativity in City’s midfield is higher with De Bruyne, David Silva, Fernandinho and Bernardo Silva – they can play in a small space. That’s why City are the champions.

If you look past the typically forthright way in which he speaks, what he says isn't really that controversial. Wenger hit upon it also the other day when he said that Liverpool need to improve technically, but also highlighted the potential cost.

To be blackly comic about it in way that he'd appreciate, I'm sure one of his motivations will the thought that, unlike his great rival Johann Cruyff, maybe he can get the better of cancer

Get well soon you brilliant mad man.

If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.
