Quality comment from Rosberg - the Ferrari smells funny.

I read somewhere that the car was "overcooling".

Congrats to Charles on his first F1 Pole position.
It may sound strange, but I still feel sad for Jules Bianchi. He could have been in the car now.

Balance was poor. Marko mentioned cooling issues but nothing from Ferrari about that. Won't get a good idea where the teams are till we go back to Catalunya. First few tracks are quite different.

Might actually help if it wasn’t for the fact that they have among the best engine on the grid and are still that shit.

Patrick Head really has got his work cut out for him to try and turn it around there.

Cut a hole in the floor and use the flinstones-style propulsion method perhaps.

Anyhow...

Things look very similar to last year in terms of qualifying pace for the first two races.  Mercedes (well, Lewis) 7/10ths quicker in Melbourne, Ferrari 3/10ths quicker in Bahrain.  Early days, but it could be another twisty-turny season.

Hamilton obviously fortunate because of what happened to Leclerc but you have to be in there to take advantage of the bad luck of others which he did by owning Vettel.

But Leclercs time will come soon and I would be very worried if I was Vettel for the long run. Shanghai is pretty similar to Bahrain so hopefully Leclerc gets another chance at the next race.

Race was entertaining but DRS is in danger of turning the racing into a Mario Kart-esq game where those behind are given a red shell or a mushroom thanks to DRS.

If it was a one off I’d agree with that summary but when it keeps on happening you can’t keep calling it luck on Hamilton’s part. Ferrari literally keep gifting Mercedes wins that much that even when things are not going their way Mercedes know that if they just keep the cars on the track they have a decent chance of getting a victory because there’s a very good chance Ferrari will cock it up somehow and today was no exception to that. Vettel should have been the one in second ready to take the victory once Leclerc started having problems instead he was 5th at the time. That wasn’t because of Hamilton’s luck, it’s because Vettel can’t compete with him and I take no pleasure in saying that.

Interesting hearing Hamilton in the interview straight after saying that when he overtook Vettel he looked at the flag on top of the grandstand and saw it was a headwind so braked later than usual, tiny details.

The new and improved Bottas I kept hearing about after Australia looked more like the old Bottas.

Felt sorry for Leclerc, he didn’t deserve that. Ferrari being too cautious with cooling in Australia and then suffering a mechanical issue. This car is fast but maybe sensitive.

He's always been labelled as a raw talent kind of driver, but he's matured into one of the most intelligent racers around, always adjusting and thinking about his moves, be it attacking or defending.

My heart breaks for Leclerc after his speed in qualifying and the maturity he showed controlling the race after a scruffy opening lap. But like Hamilton said to him after, he's got many years and wins to come.

and cracked him up a few times. the cap throwing incident

i only glanced at c4 highlights, 10 mins before it went on air and i got a tweet, when i then searched for something else the result showed up

very very unlucky on leclerc. hamilton showed a lot of class afterwards and as funky and beav said he has crossed the line into experienced smart old head whilst not losing his speed.

vettel again comes out of a brawl with hamilton with a bloody nose

Sainz was miles ahead of him and was about to overtake Max. Mclaren are much better this year, finally.

Mercs look much better in the slow corners this year and still good on fast corners. Ferrari are even faster on the straights.

Toto said they need to see if that's power or drag causing the difference. I think probably a little of both.

Big fan of Leclerc too, humble guy. It's going to be him vs Max once Hamilton and Vettel retire. And I'll be definitely behind him over Max.

It does look like that's going to be the next big rivalry - both young and super talented.

I wonder where Max will end up - Ferrari or Merc?

He won't join same team as Leclerc. I think he'll stay at Red Bull for few years, see how they do. Then see what Hamilton does. I can see him going to Mercedes when Hamilton retires if Red Bull are still 3rd fastest.

I think it's up to Hamilton. He's got a contract for 2 more years. I think if he's in touching distance of Schumacher's race wins he'll carry on.  I don't think he'll win 7 titles though. Thing with Hamilton he's in Ferrari's head now. He's mentally stronger than their whole team, he makes not only Vettel panic, but the whole decision making side as well. Priceless in this sport which often comes down to little errors.

People won't agree and like him or hate him when he retires he'll most likely be the GOAT, for me.

I still wonder if Hamilton would like a year or two at Ferrari to finish his career off. Hamilton always seems to be on a public relations campaign with Ferrari, even going up to Leclerc straight after the race yesterday.

Perhaps McLaren ? I know Alonso is waiting in the wings for when/if the car is genuinely competing for podiums but he is a few years older. It will have come full circle of Hamilton. Just a thought

I have to say it's rich from Rosberg saying Vettel cracking under pressure (which he is) when Hamilton basically exhausted Rosberg into early retirement.

You could say that he is speaking from a position of experience though rather than speculating as wildly as another pundit might be doing.
