Oooh Broad seems to be in one of his 'rip through a top order in about an hour' sort of moods.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

68/4 at Lunch.

2 each for Broad and Woakes.

Broad started the match as the 14th top wicket taker of all time. He’s overtaken Wasim, is now level with Herath and is six wickets away from leapfrogging Harbhajan, Steyn and Pollock. Good grouping. He will probably overtake Hadley and Kapil Dev before the summer is out too.

If we get these last couple quickly, we might not have too big a first innings deficit  :D

I know it's a bit after the fact, but the fanny around over England was absolutely obnoxious after the first Test.

Call them out for being shite in a game, yes, but some journalists were saying this team was as bad as the 2001 Ashes side which got dicked at home 4-1.

It definitely is the worst England side for many years and a win here won't change my opinion. Test cricket as a whole is going through a proper slump, where teams can barely win away, so it's keeping our ranking quite high. The talent of this team is the pits though, got T20 sloggers trying to be made into middle order test batsmen, a walking wicket opening the batting, our best player needs the heimlich manoeuvre when he gets past 50, our top bowlers are as old as dinosaurs and our spinner is not even the best on his county team.

Bit harsh Gerald (although will agree its the worst in a good few years).

The only ‘IPL slogger’ is Buttler and obviously the jury is still out but he did show some application last time. Two best bowlers might be getting on but they’re still comfortably better than anything else we have. Bess might not be the best spinner in his county but he doesn’t have a broken finger. Not sure how many other options we have.

It’s not the worst team for a long time, but the problem is the best players now are the best players from 4/5/6 years ago. The core of the team is still Cook, Root, Stokes, Broad, Anderson. No ones coming in and making their place assured.

Took a bloody good ball to get him too. Survived nearly 20 overs as a partnership and gave Root a bit of breathing space instead of coming in as a pseudo-opener, which he's basically been doing for the past 12 months.

I’d be mightily impressed if we clocked up -20 odd!

18.5 Deliberate short runs

18.5.1       If either umpire considers that one or both batsmen deliberately ran short at that umpire’s end, the umpire concerned shall, when the ball is dead, call and signal Short run and inform the other umpire of what has occurred and apply 18.5.2.

18.5.2       The bowler’s end umpire shall

- disallow all runs to the batting side

- return any not out batsman to his/her original end

- signal No ball or Wide to the scorers, if applicable

- award 5 Penalty runs to the fielding side

- award any other 5-run Penalty that is applicable except for Penalty runs under Law 28.3 (Protective helmets belonging to the fielding side)

- inform the scorers as to the number of runs to be recorded

- inform the captain of the fielding side and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of the reason for this action.

It is actually possible. Though it would take Boycott level stubbornness not to learn from the first offence.

Bess solution under the circumstances. 106-2 close of play. England’s day.

Root gone for 45.

Yorky’s prediction of a low scoring match looks correct; the ball is still beating the bat on a regular basis. If England can get a lead of 100-150, they’re in a very strong position.

and so it proved, caught at slip on 49.

I managed to see quite a bit of Bess's innings.  I was really impressed with how he approached it.  Some of the specialist batsmen we've had come into the team in recent years should watch and learn something from it.

It was a handsome innings. Had you not had prior knowledge of him you'd have assumed that was his normal batting position. I know he's done well in FC cricket with his bowling, but at international level I honestly think he can make real progress with his batting and become a batting all-rounder.

Are they starting early today to make up some overs? Already a decent lead but what would be a match winning one? Given the way we collapsed in both innings last time it’s hard to look too far ahead really.

I was wrong about Buttler, he certainly can play test cricket.

Agree on Broad, again just throws his wicket away, lack of understanding about the situation, I get the feeling he is a bit thick.

Indeed. The contrast with Lords is night and day; which begs the question whether the preparation for the 1st Test was woefully inadequate.
