See the MNF video with Rafa and Carragher? Rafa, when asked how to counteract/beat Liverpool, pretty much describes Ancelotti's set up in the Napoli games.

Regain the ball, pass away from typical direction of press, then receiver looking to work a pass forward/switch diagonally into space behind the advanced full backs. (After which he says it's all good in theory but Liverpool are that good that it's almost impossible to do.)

https://youtu.be/VNTMcqja-yE

Yeah exactly how I saw it too.

The whole of MNF with Rafa was superb. So much love for that guy. Loved the analysis of Istanbul too.

I'd have more respect if he'd said with a straight face, lump it up to the big man up top to knock it down to the little guy.

I think when we struggle it’s when sides are ready to play quick/risky triangles round our press and it’s usually a first time almost blind pop-off ball onto a runner round the pressing man. It’s tricky and demands massive quality and mobility in the middle of the park.

It’s a bit different to Man City but Man U at the weekend basically replayed our game plan from the CL away two seasons ago. Turning/playing out of the press in the DM position, then diagonals or direct longer balls up into the channels. Take out the tactical fouler (and press) basically, rather than take out the press.

Classic Edwards value-buy. Apparently can play both wings and number 10. He's 24 years old (25 in January I think) and his release clause is around 7 million pounds.

You can bet we were scouting him before we played them twice but he did well against us so...

And shirt sales in Japan anyone, would they almost pay the transfer fee?

With the new kit deal giving us a sizeable chunk of kit sales (which is very unusual), this might be the first time that shirt sales have come close to paying for a transfer.

Oh man! This is so true. I got so much shit from friends on this - small-time mentality, cringy, how celebrating a draw against fucking West Brom is not helpful in breeding a winning mentality.

Seems the perfect Klopp type player to me.

I’m over the moon about the news - he’s the player you looked at this season and thought “we could really do with a player like that”.

I wonder if that means that Brewster will be afforded the opportunity to go out on loan. Wouldn't it be good if he could go to Salzburg for half a season. It looks like they make the most of young players there and it'd give him a chance to play some regular football in a good team that likes to attack, albeit at a slightly lower level. Though they actually already have some very talented young forwards (as we've seen),

Yes, apparently Brewster and Jones will both be loaned.

All the talk for Brewster has been a move to the Championship, but Salzburg would be very interesting - especially since it looks like they're losing Minamino and Haland next month!

Kinda in the Keita role. I'm not sure what his defending is like but attacking wise he would be very good pinging balls between him and the front 3. He could step in for Mane or Salah too.

Looking at our first team and setting the bar very high then I think we are 3 or maybe 4 players short of "perfection".

One player who I rate highly is Koulibaly and if we could get him as well then we are pretty close to the dream team. I assume that Koulibaly would go for a world record fee for a defender but he is up there with VVD. Could they play together?

But we're getting into Fantasy Football here. We can't just go and spend record fees for players. We didn't do that for our front three or for Robbo or Matip or Gini and they have all been excellent.

Tactically, I think he can play wherever Shaq does - out wide or as the most advanced central midfielder, but he seems better fit to energetic system like ours and obviously he got higher ceilling.

And now we do, and we're smashing teams doing exactly that. It feels great.

Some Dortmund nostalgia from 2012:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mh4OSBOUzqQ

That comp is one of my favourites, a lot of these moves don't even lead to goals, some do, but some lead to saves and some to misses, but the plays are just so cool, like some mad chaotic choreography played at double speed. It's fantastic.

This current period is the best time to be a Liverpool supporter since the Paisley and Dalglish (first tenure) glory days. In fact, a case can be made that this Liverpool side is the strongest of all time, and winning the World Club championship and the Premiership will confirm that. It is even more exciting to know that the foundation and structure have been laid and re being strengthened continually to become even better. 10 years after the dark days of Benitez's ouster, the Reds are back stronger than ever before!

On the succession planning front. Marvellous!

Quote
Owners FSG are understood to have outlined a vision of the current squad winning the Premier League title this season and next before the rebuild gathers pace, during which time Klopp’s men finishing far lower down the table would be acceptable so long as the ultimate project remains on course.

By then, a lot of Liverpool’s key players will be moving into the latter part of their careers and already there are young talents and new signings being identified as potential successors.

On the same day as Klopp’s deal was announced, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to keep him in charge of Rangers until 2024 and the parallels did not go unnoticed.

It is no secret that Gerrard and many at the club would like him to manage Liverpool one day and, while it may never happen, the subject is understood to have been discussed informally by all parties. Gerrard is thought to be in regular contact with Klopp and Liverpool’s leadership.

Talks with Klopp started in late September and required only a handful of meetings and phone calls between his representatives and the Liverpool owners FSG. The 52-year-old was so relaxed that he personally took no part in the conversations and the terms do not include a break clause.

Bayern Munich’s admiration of Klopp is well known — they want to be informed if he ever considers leaving Anfield and money is no object — and he has also been the subject of lucrative offers from China in recent months, but the only approach he listened to was from Liverpool.

https://theathletic.com/1460046/2019/12/16/ornstein-on-monday-no-break-clause-in-klopps-new-contract-why-alli-chose-spurs-over-villa-and-chelsea-must-move-quickly-if-they-want-40m-ake/
