I like the last comment in particular: "If you were a neutral you could pay just to see him, immense at both ends of the pitch, yet again." How often is that said about a defender?

I like that, well in to the Burnley fans. Just appreciating a great player without resorting to pettiness.

He still 20/1 POTY B365. Ive seen much worse 20/1 shouts. He started at 40/1 and has been backed heavily according to Oddschecker

Its been a while since a defender has won it (Terry 2005 season), the media fawn over him(rightly so), he is widely considered best defender in the league and he has helped transformed our defence, turning us into absolute misers

Ahead of him are Sterling, Kane, Aguero, Silva(Fave), Hazard with Salah same odds as VVD

Silva might get a giggsy type vote but its hard to win in a team like City

This is what I said last week:
Thanks to this guy, Allisson and Gomez, I actually find it fun to watch us defend a lot of the time.

It's the first time in my 18 years of following Liverpool/football that I can say that I enjoy watching a team defend.

What a player he is. Haven't felt so 'safe' since we had Sami Hyypiä at CB. Really like how he can ping the ball 50 yards to the right address too.

Must be since the Hyypia days when we have won so many offside decisions.

He has that back line drilled.

Good shout. The back line showed great nerve to hold and spring the off-side trap against Burnley.

He was absolutely livid and charging towards the ref when one of the Burnley players caught Keita with a late challenge. Was great to see that. Resonates strongly with what he said previously about learning from the PSG players

He is clearly better than Hyppia but we judge a lot of players on hardware, which I guess is fair enough because we are not one of the 'its the taking part that counts' type of clubs, we exist to win trophies. Hopefully he wins some stuff and we can put this to bed

20/1 POTY. We would need to be still chasing in the league but if we are when the voting is cast he has a very legit shot
Got him and Alisson both at 33/1 in the summer.

I'm actually rather confident about it, of course on the proviso that we are leading/chasing in the league by time votes cast.

All the attacking player it is much of a muchness between them. They are all top quality but the gap from the best to the second is not as vast as the gap from VVD and whoever is considered 2nd best defender in the keague (based on this seasons form)

Who was the last defender to win either POTY awards? Was it McGrath all the way back in the early 90s or did England’s brave JT ever win?

Keep this up and VvD definitely has to be in the running this year.

It's interesting if he can ever win Ballon D'Or. I don't remember it given to any defender but Beckenbauer. But I'd cross my fingers for him, he's worth it.

The only thing he is missing is goals. Sami contributed 3-5 goals a season for us, and hopefully Virgil can start doing that as well, considering how good he is in the air, he's been rather unlucky for us this season.

The lack of goals is not for the lack of trying. He has been unlucky for us while getting all the good fortune when playing for the Dutch national team. He needs one to go in then subsequent goals will follow. Like Klopp, he was a striker before, he knows where the goal is

Said it in another thread, but I reckon the cat's out of the bag here. Hendo isn't a certain starter anymore and even when he does start, he isn't world class in the manner in which Van Dijk and Alisson are. And while Hendo is clearly an outstanding leader off the pitch, I just don't see him having the same authority on it.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

I had a pop on over to a Burnley forum and they had a thread on him after our game. These are actual quotes:

Quote
MOTM for them (unfortunately), I don't think I've seen a better CB at the Turf

Quote
World class player

Quote
I think if you asked all premier league strikers who the best centre back currently is in the premier league I think 80% would say Van Dijk. He's a monster.

Quote
Best CB in prem

Quote
Brilliant. I swear I saw him whistling while controlling the ball and stepping past two of our players .

Quote
That big, that fast and that good at positioning makes him an absolute roll-royce of a player.

And there were plenty more replies like that. Other clubs have realized just how good he really is. Except Everton of course, because they have a better player in Michael Keane.

Not in the league he didn't, his best ever PL tally was 4 in 03/04. After that season his goals tally was 2-1-2-1-1 in the league.

Virgil's only in the door, am sure the goals will come for him.
It's true to say that if Shankly had told us to invade Poland we'd be queuing up 10 deep all the way from Anfield to the Pier Head.

To be fair in some of the later years he didn’t play as many games but 35 goals in 10 years was a pretty decent contribution.

Like you say the goals will come with Virgil, he’s always a threat when we manage a good delivery from corners. But while a few goals would be nice I don’t think it devalues him in any way because of his immense contribution to the defence and team overall.
