No point having Sturridge on the pitch anymore.

He's pretty good at stepovers though.

Thought you lot were decent, but seemed to run out of ideas in the final third, with almost every attack a cross which the makeshift CBs dealt with well.  Sturridge, Firmino and Coutinho aren't 'challenge in the box' sort of players.

Expect Klopp to have a good whinge at half time to get them transitioning quicker, as you had some good periods of play, just needed to capitalize on them.

No point having Sturridge on the pitch anymore.

He's been the only one actually willing to try things in that first half. Far too many playing the safe pass and not nearly enough off the ball movement.

If we don't figure out how to stop Redmond then they are going to score one of the chances they've created.

We're all sorts of laboured again and our midfield is just urgh at the moment. Not sure how Klopp changes this to break down Southampton's defence. Looking to someone like Phil to just do something spectacular really because passing in front of their back 7 isn't working so great and it's asking a bit much of Milner and TAA to get the perfect cross in for the diddymen.

Here's hoping for a bit of magic second half.

Daniel needs to stay up top. everything we are doing is in front of Southampton and if we had a focal point playing off the shoulder it might make a difference. Very lucky to still be in this tie.

What is the point of Can and Henderson in midfield?

Surely it only takes one of them to hit a 5 yard sideways/ back pass.

Terrible to watch

Our midfield is AWOL, every time Southampton get the ball they waltz through and look like they are about to score.

It's not Mane's pace we miss, it's his ability to accelerate the tempo of our play, right now so many of our players are cowardly in possession, ponderous.

I'd genuinely take Sturridge off, put Firmino up front, Lallana on the right and put Woodburn at no 10.

*sigh*

Coutinho is struggling for space as he is double-marked. Can is redundant and offers nothing going forward amnd not a lot going back. There is an easy solution to that...

Matip is doing well, brings a calm head to proceedings. Lovren not so well, so many stupid balls. AAT is being targetted and is struggling.

Sturridge is being greedy but is at least involved, but Firmino, as a result, is peripheral. His work rate is great though.

Big part of the problem for me is Milner, he is not making runs wide and stretching the game, all the runs in behind are from AAT. This has been a  problem for a few weeks now, he looks like he is tired.
Beatings will continue until morale improves...

Sturridge is pointless, no physicality at all.

Same old turgid and predictable football. Still can't understand why we are slinging balls into the box and trying to hit the front with long balls. Awful.

Yeah Emre Can is too slow in body and mind to play in this side.

Not really asked them any questions and lucky they haven't put the tie beyond us with their chances.

Not sure why lallana is playing from the left instead of the right. Could do with switching him and Emre round.

Need to up the tempo and intensity. Force mistakes.

Saints should have a comfortable 6 goal margin over us over the 2 legs thus far. No exaggeration. Fair fucking play to them, like. Incredible effort on their part. Pathetic on ours.

Or we deserve to be level by virtue of our goalkeeper! That's what he's there to do. But yeah our defence has been overcommitted and AWOL too often

Coutinho still counting his extra money..

Our best chances so far have come when he's dropped deep, he stayed up top for the opening 15 mins or so and we never got the ball near him.

Based on the game and a half we've played so far you have to say we haven't been good enough and don't deserve to go through. The only good thing is that Southampton aren't out of sight, which they really should be.

Really need to come up with an answer to this 6-3-1 formation as it's all we're likely to see against us for the next few months if we don't.  Bizarrely, trying the same thing over and over again doesn't seem to be working.

I'd much rather we just do a Sakho with Can, at least in the U23s he might retain some sort of value. Against other first team players it's really decreasing.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Very strange half. Lots of passing and possession but no final ball.

They break with about 2 players and cause total havoc.

Great save from Karius

Would take Can and Sturridge off

The players need a boot in the bollocks. I'm not sure if it will help, but at least they'll get a boot in the bollocks

They'll of got one on Saturday no doubt. We're supposed to be getting s reaction from that tonight. Sadly it's not happening. Still 45 to go though. Let's try and keep calm. Plenty of time to score the goals that are required. Just need to pull our fingers out.

we need to do a bit of one touch passing. we might lose the ball but at the moment it is all too slow. Sturridge has actually been half decent - he is at least trying to make something happen. Lallana has gone quiet.

It is all just too predictable at the moment.

Far too slow and ponderous, whereas they are quick and incisive on the break.
It saddens me to see that no matter what division a team is from, they all have how to play against us sussed and we seem clueless on how to deal with it.

I just hope we offer more in the second half.

Its fairly obvious to see that the system we play can't sustain a full season, the full on high press doesn't work when the players are fucked. Where's the plan b? i don't see one. We need a bigger and better squad as well as a world class midfielder. We've been slowly declining since Xmas imo. Southampton deserve to be 2 or 3 goals ahead, we've literally created nothing. It'll be the same in the second half, we'll huff and puff and fuck around on the edge of their box then they'll break away and score... No plan b and a better squad needed.
