The porgs are characters who (hopefully) have no purpose in the movie. They're cute and cuddly and exist purely to sell toys and merchandise. The Minions are the blueprint. The reason I singled out Baby Groot is because he's the same. He's a fucking hindrance to the rest of the Guardians and does nothing other than be cute and dumb. It's still less jarring in Guardians because we know what Groot used to be, and what he hopefully (but probably won't) become again. The porgs are absolutely blatantly in there purely to sell toys. They aren't going to be a major plot point or a useful character. They're going to watch Rey train and then sneak on to the Falcon when they leave and do a bunch of comedy spots. Like when Chewie roars and the porg copies him but cuter.

The Minions were the blueprint?

I take it you're new to watching films? You've missed out on some good ones.

Star Wars transformed the merchanising scene around blockbusters 40 years ago, it is what it is. Also, I don't imagine Rian Johnson was told by any suits to create a Porg character to sell toys specifically. I'm guessing they needed a character to play off Chewbacca and bring some comedy into the thing.

And to make Luke's Island, Acht-to a bit less depressing!

I enjoy Star Wars, love watching the films and cant wait for next Wednesday. I even liked Force Awakens and Rogue One - there said it!

Consensus of the reviews I've read is that they've pretty much nailed the action, characters and emotion, and the performances are really good. Also they've taken some risks - although some of those risks might be divisive. Only criticisms I've read is that the middle bit drags a little, and some of the humour is a little misplaced.
