Rooney's been named on the bench for tomorrow's game,

Very significant given the importance of the game,

Didn't watch the game on Saturday so cannot comment on his performance

Not sure about him not looking after himself, he's always had a big frame, as a youngster he used to overpower people in his age group because of his physical advantage.

I think his problem is that he's been playing professional football since he was 16-years old. He's had +14-years and now looks finished. Most players start of playing around 19-20 so when they've played 14-years they're towards the end of their career anyway.

Rooney is basically playing like a 34-35 year old with his slow reactions and lack of pace.

I think his problem is that, from the outside, it looks like he's using his influence in both the squad and the media to get picked regularly and play wherever he wants. There's nothing wrong with a player declining, it happens to all of them, however when the decline becomes severe enough they're typically dropped. The fact that he's been getting played regularly under numerous managers suggests that either they all think he's still top class (doubtful) or they're all bending to his influence and he's putting himself ahead of the team.

Didn't think Southgate would drop him but obviously the right decision. Wonder if he'll go with Sturridge again, hopefully not.

Who'd have thought that of all people Gareth Southgate would be the one with the balls to finally drop Rooney.

Can you believe that's the fucking state of international football? That it takes balls to drop an underperforming player? Beckham's fault.
Maybe the group, led by your leadership, will see these drafts as PR functions and brilliant use of humor

Southgate says '“What’s stood out for me is that he’s captained a club where he’s had to take over from one of the biggest players in English football.'

Now he is doing it literally as well as metaphorically.

I'm not a native speaker of English. When Phil Mcnulty writes this, is he being serious or sarcastic?

"Southgate's decision is, in its starkest terms, the beginning of the end of an England career that is scheduled to finish at the 2018 World Cup in Russia."
He's referring to Rooney's career isn't he?  He's announced he'll retire after the WC.

The word scheduled implies it could end earlier doesn't it?  Is that the first time we've seen it suggested?

Yes, that's my point. Rooney has announced his retirement from the natonal team after the World Cup in Russia, which I find extremely arrogant. As if he has a divine right to play for England until he himself chooses to quit.
That's why I don't understand if Mcnulty is being serious when he states that Rooney's career will end after the World Cup, and not a day before. It's the usage of the word "scheduled" that makes me wonder if it's a dig at Honest Wayne.
When he is saying Rooney planned to(or scheduled to) end his international career with WC 2018 but it is already ending

First time since I was about 12 (2002 World Cup) that I actually want England to win.

Finally free of Rooney, Terry, Ferdinand, Beckham, Cole, Neville, Hodgson etc.

It rarely happens two years in advance though. He clearly did it in hope it would appease England fans when in reality most want him gone now, not when he's nearly 33.

Early days but I've been impressed by Southgate so far. I really think England should always be looking to bring the U21 manager through now. Just seems a natural progression if they can attract promising young managers to that role. If they know that there's a strong chance of taking the senior position in 2-4 years, I'm pretty sure it would look more attractive than most Championship jobs for example.

To a certain degree. If he can't handle the criticism and abuse anymore, he should retire now, not after the World Cup.

Wish he would "drop" the spurs players for this one - could be he requested to be "rested" but didn't need to make up Man U injury.

He's obviously left him out tonight but I'm not certain he'll bin him long-term. I think this is just to take him out of the firing line for a bit if you will.

Also this is looking like the toughest and biggest match in the group now so he wants a more solid midfield.

Erm, no he didn't.

"Southgate is right to pick Henderson for now because he’s one of the few players who captains his club. It’s the right choice for Gareth because he’s in charge for the next three games, but if England then get a new manager who is looking long term, then Dier or Stones could be in with a shout, because Jordan is not an out-and-out guaranteed starter for this country."

He suggests Dier and Stones may be in with a shout because Henderson may not be a guaranteed starter. No where does Carra say they are actually better options.

Redknapp does say long term he'd give it to Dier or Stones though.
