Norman Hunter
« on: April 17, 2020, 12:46:46 PM »
Very sad news that Norman Hunter has died from corona related illness.
For people of my age Hunter was an extremely well known player in a Leeds team who won 2 titles, an FA cup, and lost in a European Cup Final. He was also a squad member on the 66 World Cup squad.
They were also runners up on numerous occasions and fierce rivals of ours.
Whilst not a big fan of Leeds, I did respect them and his death is terribly sad news.
He was also centre piece of the famous fight with Franny Lee which can be found on you tube. Proper punches. It’s well worth a look.

Very sad. We had some titanic battles with Leeds in the late 60s/early 70s and Norman 'bite yer legs' Hunter was always in the thick of it. Uncompromising, but not in a snide way like a few of his team mates. Would have had a lot more international caps had he not being vying with Bobby Moore in that position. RIP Norman.

I was sad to hear this this morning.

I remember him and the great 'Dirty Leeds' side and our epic battles with them.

RIP Norman ( bites yer legs) Hunter. Hopefully you're enjoying a pint up there tonight with Tommy Smith.

Every team in the 60/70s had a hard man Leeds had several.

Norman was one of them would kick his own mother if he had to.

But he was never snidey about it,you knew you were in for a rough afternoon if you played against him.

Lovely fella off the pitch apparently

R.I.P Norman.

I agree with all these comments. Leeds/Liverpool games were pitched battles in the '60s, no quarter asked or given. Hunter, like our own Tommy Smith, was hard as nails, not mean-spirited. Perhaps Gerrard but without the flair.

Before my time but my arl fella rated him so good enough for me.  Remember him saying a 50:50 between Hunter and Tommy could have split the atom  :D

RIP Norman - didn't like you at the time, but still respected you.

Wish we could play football like this again.

Tough nut who could.play

I love the story of Clough's infamous Leeds speech when on day one he told all the players for throw all their medals in the bin

Johnny Giles said Clough told hunter "you're a dirty bastard, you're not liked. You like to be liked wouldn't you?"

Hunter replied "I couldn't give a fuck"

Brilliant

Another great quote was a match in which he broke his leg

Two people at club
"Hunters broken a leg"
Reply
"Who's leg is it?"

Rip bite your legs

I know this is the Norman Hunter thread, but I was also sad to hear about the death of his team-mate in that great Leeds side, Trevor Cherry.

He passed away on Friday 29th April aged 72.

RIP.

I saw him play against us several times, and met him at a Sportsman's dinner many years later.

Hard as nails on the pitch, humble and witty off it. He relished  the games against Tommy.

Proper football.
