Trying to read data from hdd of dead old laptop..
« on: August 3, 2016, 05:20:34 pm »
Rite, so Mrs Yc has a laptop that died a fair few moons ago and on the hdd there might be some old documents, pictures etc that she might need.

So I did some googling and found an Icy Box IB-AC603L-U3 adapter - which came highly recommended!, and hoped that would do the trick. However that ancient bastard of an Hitachi drive will not fit into that blasted Chilly Box. (see picture for... I don't know...)

Thoughts on what to use to fix this lads'n lasses? (yes, I've smeared meself and the adapter and the hdd in a metric fuckton of Bonjella. Didn't help... I'm numb all over tho...)

It's a standard 2.5" SATA drive (as opposed to the older PATA drives), so there shouldn't be any issues with it physically.
Maybe just try getting a 2.5" -> 3.5" adapter and connecting it to an existing desktop internally?

Meanwhile...

Something to occupy your time, at least.

Looking at the drive, it looks like it has a converter attached to the connectors. I've had a few in the past that just slide off.

Is it possible on this one? Try pinching both sides and sliding off.

I think you're probably right.
It looks like that's some kind of an adapter plugged into the drive to enable the Laptop internal connector to mate up to.
Here's another pic showing an identical drive complete and in a caddy
I remember some Dell laptops around 10 years or so ago had something similar due to the internal connector on the laptop board not having a standard Sata connector on them at the time.
You just very gently pull/prise them off and it should then reveal the standard Sata connector on the drive that's hidden behind.
I don't do polite so fuck yoursalf with your stupid accusations...

Right you fuckwit I will show you why you are talking out of your fat arse...

No problem, but thanks should really go to Chris2006 up above my post, I think he spotted and guessed it just before I did and all I then did was to confirm his thoughts.

Drinks will be on Mrs Yc to the both of yous - as it was her old laptop. She had a lot of old pictures and documents that are now freed. ;D
