It's not hard seeing that he looks a little thin/lean. Seems to manage just fine so far tho. However I do believe some extra weight would help. Perhaps not. Perhaps it would just slow him down. No expert on the matter but I understand what rash is saying.

Just read Matip won't be going to the Africa Cup of Nations & will be concentrating on his club career.
Has to be old news if I'm breaking this!  ;D

fair enough, Harden is a quality defender

The perfect defensive specimen and the benchmark for all defenders.
Matip can learn a thing or two on defence from Harden.

You are quite right, but I still don't get it: even when we defend well, there are still a couple of points where we screw up enough collectively or individually to concede. Is this normal, or is it due to a lack of quality, or is it due to a lack of complementarity of players, or is it due to a lack of experience playing together...why do we always concede goals? 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8 conceded in the first 5 games if I'm not mistaken.

But yes, he looks good overall.

Anyone comparing him to Hyppia is definitely underestimating him this guy has everything, passing, composure, height, normally stays on his feet and establish ing a partnership with Lovern

Thought he played well other than the horrific defending for the goal. That's my issue with most of our defenders though, nearly every week it's "other than the goal" so hopefully we can sort that out.

That said, it feels different with Matip. I think he looks REALLY good. Brainfart for the goal, I think he was expecting the first time cross across the 6 yard box and was trying to cut it out.

Has been great though for the most part. Matip and Lovren is looking like it could be a great partnership.

Hyppia was a great player, Matip, is going to be a lot better as he has a higher level of attributes. Will be superior and I love Sami.

Don't talk nonsense. Nobody in the history of the Premier League has been 'a lot better' than Hyypia. He's one of the top 10 CBs the Prem has seen.

Hyypia won almost every trophy he could during his time here. Matip hasn't even played half a dozen games yet.

He does, you'll realise it as the season goes on , dominant centre back with pace and passing, and working with less midfield protection. He has the best attributes of Hyppia and Agger. Pretty much the perfect combination.

To add to what the others have already said, not only was Hyypia a brilliant defender in terms of key defensive skills like reading a game, dominating in the air etc., but he also had great technique. He was good on the ball. He wasn't a dribbler, nor was he as supremely cultured as Mats Hummels, but, in the words of Dietmar Hamman, he had the technique of a midfielder.

Had Hyypia been fast, he would have been one of the best in the world.

Aside from their goal, Matip and Lovren were top notch tonight.  8)

I'll raise what he said, Hyypia was probably second to Hansen for the best CB's to play for this club. You never know, Matip might be but let's just remember he hasn't even had a season with us yet; let alone 10.

He's a very smooth CB, heads footballs to team mates, keeps the ball and knows when to complicate things and when to keep it simple. It is a lazy comparison but you can see why Manc lovers like Tyler are comparing him to Ferdinand.

The dynamism of Sakho crossed with the calm assuredness of an Agger/Hyypia. It's early days yet, but this guy is looking like an absolute steal.

Agreed mate, I've seen many false dawns but this guy missed preseason, was already in a pretty good team, I actually can't think of a defender we've ever had so good on the ball while so decent in the air.

Never sure how to assess a defender whose had a really good game but also dropped a rickett
What on earth he's doing going to ground on their goal is beyond me - bizarre. He's got to be calmer in those moments.

However when the game was in front of him he looked boss.
Ton of potential
