Gary Shandling Has Died
« on: March 24, 2016, 08:32:40 pm »
http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/garry-shandling-dead-larry-sanders-show-show-1201738601/

Comedian, actor, writer and producer Garry Shandling, known for “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” and “The Larry Sanders Show,” has died, TMZ reported on Thursday.

He died at an L.A. hospital on Thursday, according to the outlet. A cause of death has not been released. He was not known to be suffering from any illnesses, and just a few days ago retweeted Kathy Griffin’s photo of himself, her and Bob Odenkirk.

Born in Chicago, he was raised in Tucson, Arizona, and started out majoring in electrical engineering before completing a marketing degree at the University of Arizona. After moving to Los Angeles, he sold a script for “Sanford and Son” and also wrote for “Welcome Back, Kotter.” He guest-hosted “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and was in consideration to become Carson’s replacement.

In 1986, he created his own sitcom “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” for Showtime. The show was nominated for four Emmys, and ran until 1990. The show was noted for being one that often broke the fourth wall, with Shandling speaking directly to the audience, and he played a version of himself: a stand-up comedian aware of the fact that he is a sitcom character.

His second show came with “The Larry Sanders Show” on HBO, which ran from 1992 to 1998. He starred and co-created the comedy, set in the office of a fictional late-night talk show, with Dennis Klein. Shandling was nominated for 18 Emmys for the show and, along with Peter Tolan, won an Emmy for the series finale.

“The Larry Sanders Show” was said to have a lasting impact on comedy at HBO, influencing such series as “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” It cracked several “best of” lists, including Time’s 100 Best TV Shows of All Time.

NBC offered him $5 million to take over “Late Night” when David Letterman moved to CBS in 1993, but he declined. He was also offered “The Late Late Show” but declined to do the “Larry Sanders Show.”

He was also a formidable host, hosting for both the Grammys and Emmy Awards several times.

He appeared in and did voices for films including “Iron Man 2,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Dr. Dolittle,” “Zoolander” and “Over the Hedge.”

More to come…

Jeffrey Tambor was talking a couple of years ago about auditioning for the part of Hank.
He's quite nervous, but feels he's done great and thought there was chemistry between himself and Garry.
Garry tells him 'we'll let you know in a couple of days'.

Jeffrey goes home, tells his wife it went well. And starts thinking. And obsessing over it. 'Was it too much? Did I have enough energy? What if someone else is better?' etc etc.  Driven mad, he phones Garry at 11.00 that night.
'Listen Garry, I know you said we'll let you know in a few days, but can you tell me now if I got the part?'

Garry says 'That's exactly what Hank Kingsley would have done. Welcome aboard'

Paul Daniels and now Gary Shandling!

He'd of liked that, not that he ever knew Paul Daniels, I guess. Though that was Gary Shandling an American who got irony, through the art of piss taking by letting you realise it was funny, but by the time you'd realised what was going on, he'd moved on.

The time he meets Gervais and has Gervais in knots not knowing if he's getting the piss took out of him, or if he's really, really getting the piss took out of him - Gervais got out awkwarded, by the king of awkward.

A sad, sad loss to the world of comedy. RIP Gary Shandling.

Truly brilliant show, way ahead of it's time. For some reason HBO don't stream it?

RIP Garry

Though he did it in the 90s, he essentially dragged comedy into the 21st century. Larry Sanders was utterly unique, ground-breaking and brilliant. Great talent.

I remember that, and he absolutely did perplex Gervais and out-awkward him - at least, I like to think that's what he was doing deliberately, rather than just being a bit off and weirdly sensitive that day.  :P

The guy was obviously so smart, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he took it to a level of subtlety and believability in that episode that it transcended ha-ha comedy and exposed Gervais as the less self-assured and sophisticated proponent of cringe humour. While at the same time satirising oversensitive Hollywood egos/himself? Pretty masterful if you view it that way, and there are tiny clues that Gervais was in on the joke, at least before it got uncomfortable even for him.

Link

Came in to post that link. Watched that again last night after I heard the news. Such poignancy, especially when he is talking about Robin Williams' death and kvetching continually in the coffee shop. The BBC has never matched its Thursday night double bill of comedy during the mid to late 90s: Seinfeld followed Larry Sanders. For me, it made that Comedians In Cars episode one of the best - along with the extraordinary Michael Richards episode - especially when Jerry and Gary visit the film studios where they both worked at the same time during the 90s.

A perhaps under appreciated comedy genius. RIP.

absolutely gutted....loved everything I saw him in.....and many years ago even won an all expenses paid trip to LA courtesy of answering questions about The Larry Sanders Show on the long-gone TV channel UK play, so he remained a firm favourite ......great comic actor, very influential ...and a master of the chat show - his numerous Letterman spots were always a total hoot

RIP Garry / Larry........thanks for Beverly Hills

I can truly say I never, ever watched Leno or Letterman (or any subsequent chat show Kimmel, Conan etc) quite the same way after seeing that horrific Larry Sander show   ;D   I remember stumbling on it way back in the day while 'flipping' and seeing him talking to Robin Williams.

At that point I really thought this was another chat show, until they went to a break and the cameras for some reason kept rolling, moving up close, the quiet conversation went something like:

Robin Williams (wearing a green suit, sounding nervous): Larry how do I look?
Larry: Relax, you look fine, everything is ok.
Robin Williams: Seriously, you don't think I look like an Irish pimp??

I was hooked   :lmao :lmao

RIP
