As much as I don't like it I think it shows a sad, yet inevitable evolution of the game, especially in England. The commercial power of the Premier League is beyond massive and the appeal of making money any way possible has become part and parcel of the business – so to speak.
I’m sure the previous generation of fans probably felt similar when replica shirts starting popping up in the early 80’s. Mass market changes and commercial probability are obviously taking the game away from its roots it’s no coincidence that some clubs charge 90 to 100 quid a ticket for the big games, even less of a coincidence that some clubs have become monster, floated, stock assured corporations.
We can certainly sound or angst at the change but I don’t believe we would be able to arrest the pace of the change, we may have to accept it, rather than embrace it and worry about other areas of the club moving forward, such as retaining our community identity and not becoming one of those monster, floated, stock assured corporations.
