I imagine that this thread will be amusing, but in a different way to the Moyes thread. Van Gaal is obviously a decent manager - but also a ticking time bomb.

Really interesting appointment. He's a great coach is Van Gaal, very precise tactical planning on positioning and different concepts. Ball circulation often to wait for spaces rather than trying to open them up (the latter is what Guardiola prefers to do). Overmars often compained under him that he wouldn't allow him to take defenders on 1v1 but it was because Van Gaal thinks that a lot of 1v1s are actually 1v2s because there is generally either a double-mark or a covering defender behind. If so, then there must be space elsewhere so ball is switched inside and then the team tries to quickly use the space that may have opened up through the ball circulation. Interesting to see how United play tactically under him.

And also he's a very 'interesting' character. Could blow up...

I'm sure they've known for sometime where he was headed.

Giggs said: "I am thrilled to have the chance to serve as assistant manager. Louis van Gaal is a world-class coach and I know I will learn a lot about coaching from being able to observe and contribute at such close quarters. Manchester United has been a huge part of my life and I'm delighted to be able to continue that relationship in such a key role."

Subtle.

Yep, those cones won't put themselves out will they Giggs-eh?

He's better than Moyes for sure. They may even finish higher tha Everton this season.

Yep, those cones won't put themselves out will they Giggs-eh?

That'll be Butt/Scholes' job, surely :).

My point about the 'subtlety' of the 'key role' phrase was that it's unnecessary (and a little exaggerated) to describe your own appointment as Assistant Manager in those terms. Giggs, I think, is referring to himself (in terms the United fans will recognise) as 'manager in waiting'. That's obvious to all of us in how this has been approached, but in the interests of backroom harmony hardly needed spelling out within 10 minutes of the appointments and suggests that not only will that possibility be at the forefront should Van Gaal have a difficult spell, but that Giggs' priorities as assistant manager may be secondary to his own posturing for the job he actually wants. Again, obvious, but I find it a little surprising he's dropped quite so blatant a hint (as I read it) immediately.

I'd agree, and should they not fly out of the blocks next season, the clamour for some sort of Class of 92 management team mash up will be growing before xmas.

I'm disappointed I have to say.  I was hoping he'd disembowel Sky's Garry Cotterill in his first press conference.

Actually, there hasn't been a press conference yet. So, fingers crossed...

Appointing Giggs is just unnecessarily cluttering up his job. Perhaps it's something the club negotiated into his working brief - 'mentor' Giggs and his chums. Does anyone really see Van Gaal picking him if he had been given free reign to choose.

Nah...

Ferguson:

"We unanimously agreed on Louis Van Gaal," said Ferguson.

"Louis is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. I've admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of assistant manager here."

"There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this club."

Rooney won't be a fan, but that's arguably beneficial for United rather than a bad thing.

When you consider that the alternative is an aging and injury-prone RVP, you can hardly say it is a clear benefit.

He has just switched to a 5-3-2 with the Dutch team. This is probably due to the Dutch defense being shite though.

Probably 5-3-2 at United then...

It will be the same as everywhere van Gaal has been...

He will be building a foundation if they let him which the club will benefit for years to come, similar to Barca, Bayern, Ajax etc. In the meantime he will insult very person getting in his way possible within the club and annoy the shite out of everyone.
One thing does need to be said: in the post-Benitez era, there was media-led clamour (but also some politicking going on at the club) to make the club more English; the idea being that the club had lost the very essence of what it means to be ‘Liverpool’. Guillem Ballague 18/11/10

This is going to be great fun. He's a great coach, and they'll definitely challenge for top 4, but he's a fruitloop. He'll have knocked Rooney out by September, shown Cleverly his testicles by Christmas and headbutted 3 journalists before the season's out.

Oh fuck is that all ?
