Everyone loves The Wire.  I have seen 4.5 episodes and find each episode rather hard to get through.  What is wrong with me?

Do I have to stick through further or am I just not likely to get it?
The pace is slow. If you can get used to it you'd probably enjoy it. Don't think action-cop series, its more Tales of the Riverbank but set in Baltimore.

I also watched The Wire, in fact, finished the first season and went far along the second season. May have even watched the second season, but it seemed repetitive. May be you like it when you watch an episode every week. I tried to binge-watch it, so I got really bored at some point.

I am looking for other shows to get on to. This thread is nice because I can look some of the popular ones on here. I wish there were more historical shows like Rome.

Brain dead ? 😉

Stick with it. There are 100 pages in the wire thread filled with people like you, who are then raving about it two weeks later when it clicks
You said, I think I'm like Tennessee Williams, I wait for the click, I wait but it doesn't kick in

The Wire
Breaking Bad
Game Of Thrones
Californication
True Detective
The Office USA/UK
Suits
Sherlock
Generation Kill
Boardwalk Empire
The biggest problem anywhere in the world is that people's perceptions of reality are filtered through the screening mesh of what they want, and do not want, to be true.

In no order.

The sopranos
Curb your enthusiasm
Roseanne
Steptoe and son
The Simpson's
Seinfeld
True detective
Arrested development
The office us
Only fools

Only a few from the list I feel were steadily brilliant from start to finish, obviously some wained off near the end.
For instance the Simpson's wained off, but the Simpson's best moments are possibly the best moments in tv comedy ever, which is why it will always be better than the likes of Southpark for me .

A comedy heavy list.

For me the wire is not a slow burner, I found it gripping from the get go, only on season 3, and been ages since I finished that so need to get back to it.
Infact I found it quite the opposite, as in, season one was brilliant, season two not so, and then season three brilliant.

In order of enjoyment -

1. Only Fools and Horses.
2. Boardwalk Empire
3. Breaking Bad
4. Game of Thrones
5. Lost
6. Sherlock
7. The Office (UK)
8. Dexter
9. Father Ted
10. Misfits

Struggled to remember ten series that I've watched, to be honest. Luckily I had a nose of other people's lists in here and my memory sparked back into life.

I didn't find the first season great to be honest though I did like it (accents are very hard to adjust to first time), I tended to really love the even numbered seasons however.

1) Game of Thrones
2) Rome
3) Upstairs Downstairs (original)
4) Buffy

Then it gets harder to separate the rest

5) Firefly
6) Chuck
7) Walking Dead
8. The Killing (original)
9) Desperate Housewives
10) Star Trek, the original series

Honourable mentions to

Death Valley, Sherlock, The Wire, Soprano's, Arrested Development, Twin Peaks, Deadwood, Misfits, Being Human (UK version)

Rome was class, cancelled by HBO/BBC due to it's incredible costs, it was quite probably one of the most expensive television programmes ever made.

If you're put off by The Wire's unrelenting realism and attention to detail and If you like things a little more surreal you could maybe try "Carnivale", there's only two seasons but it's one of the most offbeat, surreal pieces of television ever, there's an episode directed by the filmmaker Peter Medak that is one of the weirdest things you'll ever see, alternatively maybe try something a little lighter like the always excellent "Justified" or the largely under rated "Burn Notice", that last one is pure entertainment though, don't expect "I Claudius" which if you like historical dramas and haven't seen it might be worth checking out.

1.  Friday Night Lights
2.  Breaking Bad
3.  Dawson's Creek
4.  Parenthood
5.  The Shield
6.  Curb Your Enthusiasm
7.  Drake & Josh
8.  Rescue Me
9.  The Office USA
10. The Good Wife

Tried to restrict it to shows that are over apart from Parenthood (looks like it might be curtains anyway) and The Good Wife which has been consistently brilliant for 100+ episodes now.

Watching about 40 shows at the moment so it'll most likely change a lot in the next 5-10 years when most of those finish.

Sopranos and House equal number 1 for me.
Fraisier, best American comedy show ever imo
Porridge and Only fools and Horses best British comedy shows ever imo.
World at war, the music, Laurence Olivier's voice and not even going into each actual shows content.
Band of brothers, quality.
Hill Street Blues, one from my youth years.
The Wire, slightly ruined by the 2 guys who are shot dead but you can see breathing.

Ha ha I know how precious peeps can be about the wire so I'll try and thread carefully...

I didn't catch it first time around, or even second of third....I was literally years late to the party. As a result, for me it felt derivative, even a touch hackneyed or cliched. I appreciate this isn't the case as it was the precursor rather than follower.....but try as I might (and I tried thrice) to get into into I just couldn't as it felt dated and like several shows I'd seen before. I imagine if I'd have caught it when it first came out I'd have loved it but as it was it lacked impact for me....

It's a difficult spot to be in as I don't know anyone who doesn't bloody love it lol

I can't begin to understand your lack of love for both The Wire and Breaking Bad...but it's cool...

What's not cool is your lack of love for Deadwood!! Cocksucker!!

The dialogue in Deadwood is better than anything on the tv...ever.Cocksucker!!
