The fact it's taken them over five years to respond to this just demonstrated the depth and degree to which they were culpable. Looking forward to some mealy-mouthed self-defence and some trite hand-wringing, along with painfully crafted PR speak.

The article I just read (Sky News I think) said it took this long because they couldn’t release it during any ongoing legal proceedings.

They have both been very good at keeping focus on Hillsborough and the police accountability. Only David Conn at the Guardian has been better from a journalistic point of view

Totally agree.
Shelagh always  come across as  very sensitive to the suffering Hillsborough caused so  many and James is very much the Rottweiler the guilty should be held to account (if that makes sense).

Excerpt from David Conn's article today:

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jan/31/police-chiefs-apologise-for-hillsborough-failures?CMP=share_btn_tw

Hewitt also condemned the toxic chants about the disaster directed at Liverpool supporters by some rival fans at recent matches, which have caused deep offence to families and survivors.

“It’s disgusting and action needs to be taken [by match police and stewards] to stop people doing that,” he said.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Jennie and Phil were spot on today on R4. We need 'Duty of Candour' and Independent Public Advocate.

As she says, "...desperately needed and long overdue..."

Also, she asks for, "a level playing field of funding" <--- MASSIVE obstacle, as the families of the 97 well know.

#hillsboroughlawnow - a charter for the bereaved. The first suggestion of this was made in 1997. 26 years later, we still don't have it. Wow.

 Hillsborough Law

A Hillsborough Dad a Hillsborough Mum
A Hillsborough Daughter a Hillsborough Son.
A Hillsborough Nephew, Uncle or Niece.
Will their loved ones ever find real peace?

A Hillsborough Brother and a Sister too.
A Hillsborough suicide, there's been a few.
A Hillsborough Granddad a Hillsborough Nan.
Hillsborough corruption and lies, to a man.

Hillsborough Flowers and an eternal flame.
Hillsborough prayers and the endless pain.
And for all the other cover ups, plenty more.
Don't stand in the way of a 'Hillsborough Law'

[snip]
He refused to retreat from his view that the 1989 Hillsborough disaster - which claimed the lives of 97 Liverpool supporters - had been caused by "tanked-up yobs".

And in a 1996 letter replying to fan Graham Skinner - whose friend had died in the disaster - Sir Bernard said Liverpool should "shut up about Hillsborough".

See ya. You're the one shutting up now. Another of the increasing minority of wankers snuffs it.

Dignity my arse - get to fuck and rot in hell with yer bitch.

That letter of his is honestly so shocking, just a reminder of how far we came in terms of public perceptions of Hillsborough as that seems to have been the prevailing attitude about it in many parts of the country.

'Bernard Ingham would never revise his stance that 'a tanked-up mob' caused the Hillsborough disaster, despite it being proven to be police lies; In 2012 he confirmed to me that he was repeating what South Yorkshire police had told Thatcher the next day.' - https://twitter.com/david_conn/status/1629856622414647297

^ The article linked written by David Conn (and linked to above) from 2012: www.theguardian.com/football/2012/apr/12/tanked-up-mob-hillsborough-police-thatcher

Ingram would rather believe the words of the lies of the police than believe the facts and evidence known at the time of the disaster, never mind in later years when he ignored more evidence that came to light. Even after the 2016 Inquests. Seems his ego and political idealism would prefer to acknowledge and embrace the lies... than face the truth. Fuck him.

Sheffield Wednesday have secretly decreased the capacity of the Leppings lane stand from 4,700 to 3,700 following 'crush like' conditions during the FA cup match with Newcastle.

Sheffield City Council chaired a Safety Advisory Group meeting and made 15 recommendations including the removal of a corrugated fence, a review of ticketing errors and stewarding and a reduction in capacity to 3,700 from 4,700.

But this meeting was held in private and its results were never made public until Newcastle and it's supporters trust made a freedom of information request this week.

The official public line at the time was ‘A review at Hillsborough Stadium over concerns about crowd movements has concluded, stating that all aspects of safety at the stadium complied fully with the club’s Safety Certificate. Minor recommendations were made relating to the overall matchday experience.’

But the same old stuff is happening again.

So, in recent months we’ve seen:

1 Police officers acting with contempt for the law and civilians (Met scandals)
2 Rival fans chanting Hillsborough slurs en masse without censure
3 Dangerous crushing at the Leppings Lane end
4 Authorites falsely blaming late-arriving, ticketless Liverpool fans for terrifying chaos at a match

But lessons have been learned.
I am alone now. I am beyond recrimination. The curtains have shut, the furniture has gone. I am transforming. I am vibrating. I am glowing. I am flying. Look at me now.

Government responds to 2016 report from the Bishop of Liverpool

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-england-merseyside-67636581

No Hillsborough law

Police will be 'advised' to 'promote a culture of openness, honesty and transparency during investigations and public inquiries'. No legal requirement for a "duty of candour".

A 'consultation' will also be launched to improve legal aid for bereaved families in the aftermath of terrorist incidents or public disasters.

I wont write anything else because it will make my blood boil over. It took them 6 years and 7 Home Secretaries to come up with that...

Sorry, but the reporting here makes my blood boil from BBC, again reflecting the couldn't care less attitude from the major institutions in this country. News on BBC framed as if this is a positive and neglects to mention that they have all but rejected the law.

Compare to the Guardian and David Conn, who have accurately reported.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/dec/06/government-rejects-hillsborough-law-but-adopts-charter

This is a big deal, and the reason for such subtle framing is why lies, and a lack of care and indifference spreads around this issue. Utterly shameful. Sooner Labour get in, the better.

‘Promote a culture of openess’  What a joke and yet again, no accountability, no remorse, no justice
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain

As expected. They want to continue to "mark their own homework". If you needed a reason to vote Labour in the next GE, this is why.

Sir Keir promised to bring in Hillsborough Law, campaigner says
Hillsborough campaigner Margaret Aspinall, whose son died in the disaster, has said she has met Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer privately and he has promised to bring in a Hillsborough law if elected.

She said the need for a law was "not about the Hillsborough families" but about anyone who went through anything similar in the future.

"We don’t want to be here campaigning still after 34 years," she said.

"I want to be able to get on with my life and I’m sure the rest of the families do.

"We are here because we are concerned for the good of other people."

David Conn has also done an analysis piece on this too (as well as his earlier article linked to on here)...

'Hillsborough law: government leaves victims’ families disappointed again':-

The relatives of those who died have been denied the positive legacy they have relentlessly sought, but they resolve to keep going
