UKIP councillor blames storms and floods on gay marriage

A UKIP councillor has blamed the recent storms and heavy floods across Britain on the Government's decision to legalise gay marriage.

David Silvester said the Prime Minister had acted "arrogantly against the Gospel".

In a letter to his local paper he said he had warned David Cameron the legislation would result in "disaster".

UKIP said Mr Silvester's views were "not the party's belief" but defended his right to state his opinions.

Mr Silvester, from Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, defected from the Tories in protest at David Cameron's support for same-sex unions.

In the letter to the Henley Standard he wrote: "The scriptures make it abundantly clear that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel (and in naked breach of a coronation oath) will be beset by natural disasters such as storms, disease, pestilence and war."

He added: "I wrote to David Cameron in April 2012 to warn him that disasters would accompany the passage of his same-sex marriage bill.

"But he went ahead despite a 600,000-signature petition by concerned Christians and more than half of his own parliamentary party saying that he should not do so."

He then went to on blame the Prime Minister for the bad weather:

"It is his fault that large swathes of the nation have been afflicted by storms and floods."

He went on to say that no man, however powerful "can mess with Almighty God with impunity and get away with it".

A UKIP spokeswoman said: "It is quite evident that this is not the party's belief but the councillor's own and he is more than entitled to express independent thought despite whether or not other people may deem it standard or correct."

Independent thought made the UK "a wonderful, proud, diverse and free country".

Henley's Tory MP John Howell, said: "I thought Mr Silvester's letter was not the sort of thing that he should have written in today's age.

"He really needs to consider his position."

Can this be considered hate speech ?
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

An interesting rival theory to global warming! I never before noticed the correlation between equal rights and climate change. This is what modern science is missing; ignorant, narrow minded, Christian fundamentalist idiots.

Supposed to taste just like popcorn so, "10 ways to deep fry locusts"?

More and more tories keep doing that, its like a party which demonises the poor, the young and the unemployed whilst giving tax breaks to businesses and ignoring tax avoidance isn't right wing enough for them. Downright disturbing if you ask me.

Another media smear, shows how scared the establishment controlled media are of UKIP. Thankfully insane religious beliefs aren't UKIP party policies.

A little research shows that all the members who made such comments were removed or stripped of their candidacy, the "nazi salute" member was suspended until cleared by the police (it clearly wasn't a Nazi salute, come on, be serious. You really think a politician would publicly post a picture of himself doing a Nazi salute?) And Frottage openly admitted to the trust fund and said it was a mistake.

But don't let facts get in the way, just listen to the media, UKIP are evil racists and they totally don't have the most anti-extremist policies of any of the big parties

Just so you know, Labour have a known ex Nazi as a councillor, but really the personal views of these people aren't that important, at the end of the day party policy is what counts, I personally reckon the media smear campaign is just driving more people to support UKIP, and creating a siege mentality.

Godfrey Bloom's still a member of UKIP despite being technically an independent MEP.

All the four featured parties in politics at the minute are varying degrees of shite from one another but in the short space of time it's been at the forefront of politics UKIP members have made more noticeable gaffes and blunders that are likely to offend.  You keep saying media smear, take off the tin hat and realise there are a lot of people in the party with dubious personal credentials.

"A smear campaign is an intentional, premeditated effort to undermine an individual's or group's reputation, credibility, and character.

I personally consider the continued attempt by the mainstream media to portray UKIP as a more racist party than others despite evidence to the contrary, and attempting to use conflation to try and ascribe individual members views as the views of the party as a whole to be a smear campaign.

Hence why I'm not voting.

However I do feel each party has made just as many gaffes as UKIP, but you don't see them as the mainstream media has a vested interest in covering them up (btw, LibLabCon MP's are claiming MORE on expenses than ever before, they really have no shame)

I just find it such an affront to politics when media storms are whipped up because some ex-Tory UKIP member said something silly that in no way reflects party policy, in fact it should be a more damning indictment of what radical christianity can do to otherwise sane peoples reasoning skills.

A Ukip councillor who blamed the Christmas and new year floods on the passing of gay marriage laws has been suspended from the party, a spokesman has said.

Henley-on-Thames councillor David Silvester, who defected from the Tories in protest at David Cameron's support for same-sex unions, said he had warned the prime minister of "repercussions" if gay marriage went ahead.

He was suspended by the party after defying a request not to do further interviews on his beliefs following his initial claims made in a letter to a local newspaper. The move came as leader Nigel Frottage launched a clearout of "extremist, nasty or barmy" views from the party ahead of polls in May.

On Sunday he caused fresh controversy telling BBC Radio Berkshire that being gay was a "spiritual disease" that can be healed.

He said the new law, paving the way for the first gay marriages in Britain this spring, was the latest mistake that would anger God – following on from abortion laws, which he likened to the Holocaust.

In the radio interview, which followed his initial claims about the link between flooding and gay marriage in a letter to the Henley Standard, Silvester said: "I don't have a problem with gay people.

"I believe as a Christian I should love gay people and indeed, I do. My prayer for them is they will be healed.

"When I was at Bible college I did a thesis on homosexuality and I came across the writings of an American psychiatrist, Jeffrey Satinover. He came up with two particular beliefs; one, he said it has not been proven at all that the gay condition comes from the genes, and second he said that by the Holy Spirit, there is always power for a gay person to be healed.

"I believe that is what the Apostle Paul said in the New Testament; he said some of you are gay but you have been healed. There is healing for the gay condition and I believe a Christian should long for gay people to be healed and to have normal heterosexual lives.

"It is nonsense to say it is homophobic. If you love a person enough to want them to be healed and to have a proper family, that is hardly homophobic.

"It is a spiritual disease … it's not what I say, it's what the Bible says."

Silvester said he was convinced that there were "repercussions for a nation persisting in what is wrong", and that he had clear beliefs "there are things that are right and wrong".

"Over the years we have done many things that have caused problems," he said.

"One, for example, is the abortion law in which something like six million children, as many as the people killed by the Nazis in the death camps, have been killed as a result of the abortion laws.

"Now, this is a process. The latest in this process is these homosexual laws and the homosexual marriage."

Expanding on his views about the repercussions of the state, Silvester added: "I am a man who prays every day for every member of the cabinet and for every member of the royal family and when, two years ago, I wrote to the prime minister to warn him there are repercussions for serious breaches of the Coronation Oath, such as this one has been, when I saw what followed I naturally assumed this was the result of them going against God's laws.

"This is not new, this happened in the Old Testament – they were warned if they turned against God there would be pestilence, there would be war, there would be disasters.

"All I'm doing is following the pattern that the Old Testament set out for a nation that followed God. If they followed God, things would go well, if they rebelled against God, then there would be repercussions."

The councillor said Ukip, to whom he defected from the Conservative party, had told him not to give any more interviews.

He said: "I had a phone call yesterday from one of them and the instructions I have got from now on is not to answer anybody and not to do interviews such as this one... [this] is the last one.

"I'm not going to go into [their reasons]. That's a private discussion between me and them."

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2014/jan/19/ukip-councillor-gay-people-spiritual-disease-pray-healed-david-silvester

Frottage is going to be busy in the next few months getting rid of the barmy elements in the party. Wonder if they'll be anyone left....

The truly depressing fact is that the UK Independence party finished in top place in a poll for the most popular political party. I despair.

Another media smear, shows how scared the establishment controlled media are of UKIP. Thankfully insane religious beliefs aren't UKIP party policies.

Just for balance:

Labour councillors suspended after racist comments:

Labour Councillor claims he lost his virginity to a holographic alien at the age of 5

Tory councillor has affair with school girl, then is arrested for drunk driving:

Tory councillor calls for all illegal immigrants to be shot:

UKIP are the only party to not allow ex BNP/NF members, Labour have ex-BNP members as councillors

Don't take this as an endorsement of UKIP, I'm not planning to vote for any of them, just a little tired of the media attempting to sully UKIP's name, when are quite evidently not an extremist party like the BNP or the NF.

He wrote a letter to the paper.  That is hardly a smear.  And we all know the reason that UKIP do not allow ex BNP members.

They won the general election?  When did that happen?

He says it here and he rightfully gets lambasted for it.
He says it in the US and would (probably) get elected to Congress for it.

Does make you thankful that religion insanity isn't a big a part of politics in the UK. Hopefully this imbecile gets burned enough by this to lose his seat and disappear into obscurity as soon as possible. Good riddance.

Agreed, couldn't help but think of the Tea Party loons when I read this. We should be thankful that this is such a big deal on a national level here really.
