Liverpool Football Club’s plans for expansion
« on: January 9, 2013, 12:08:17 pm »
Liverpool were the leading force in English soccer in the years before the Premier League and, despite underachieving in recent times, remain among the world’s best-supported teams. Transatlantic commercial duo Billy Hogan and Olly Dale explain how the club is reaching out to a global fanbase which is hungry for success but loyal to the cause.

Cheers for that - definitely an interesting read and answers a few questions.

Dale is the Liverpool end of the Boston connection. Ultra-high end hospitality suite where you get to meet the owners? Interesting one, would imply they'll be over more regularly? Snippets about a regionalised commercial approach - tailored to area with sponsors for each area. No mention of turning internet interest into cash though.

Planning permission for redevelopment of Anfield slated for this summer but that's not a quote.

I thought there were a lot of bits in there that kind of showed they view us as supporters/fans over being consumers. Very little about them milking the fan base directly but rather using the large fan base (and keeping it happy via localised free content) to target commercial partners.

It's direct image of magazine so pulling text off will be a pain.

I think that would be more likely than Henry/Werner/Vinik to be honest if Kenny takes up a role. But I posted that before they'd flown that kite :)

Sorry hitman - did try it with a pdf text programme but it needs so much editing that it's pointless posting it.

Works fine for me on an iPad.

Quite interesting really.

FFA in negotiations to bring EPL giants Liverpool to Sydney

ENGLISH soccer giants Liverpool could be following Manchester United to Australia in July.

Soccer boss David Gallop has been in secret talks with Liverpool officials for several weeks.

Club representatives are in Australia this weekend and attended Saturday night's Sydney FC-Melbourne Victory game.

The Liverpool game would be played on the Wednesday night or weekend after an A-League all-stars team meet Manchester United at ANZ Stadium on Saturday, July 20.

Tickets for the Red Devils game sold out within two days. FFA officials are expecting the same response for tickets to see Liverpool, one of the world's most famous sporting clubs.

Steven Gerrard and Uruguayan champion Luis Suarez are their biggest names. They also have a strong Aussie connection through Newcastle's Craig Johnston and more recently Socceroo Harry Kewell and current back-up goalkeeper Brad Jones.

Like the Manchester United game, Liverpool would generate more $10 million from gate takings, corporate sales and merchandising and would give soccer another massive boost in this country.

Commercial free-to-air television networks have all expressed interest in the games. At this stage, ANZ Stadium is favoured to get both Manchester United and Liverpool, but Melbourne will bid for Liverpool.

A decision on a venue is expected by next weekend.

ANZ has a massive year in sport, including two Origin games, a Bledisloe Cup, the British and Irish Lions, Manchester United, two World Cup soccer qualifiers and the NRL finals.

The modern game looks to entice customers, supporters are a necessary inconvenience.

Consumers/supporters are not mutually exclusive, just a matter of perspective. I think things are being over romanticized. Because there's more money in the sport than there used to be and financial clout and on-field success are directly correlated, the business side of the game has had more attention than ever but it's not like clubs looking at supporters and how to sell things to them to increase the club's revenue is some new phenomenon.

From a business perspective of running the club and revenue opportunities, all supporters are potential consumers. But a supporter is an individual's choice, and the union that brings us all together and connects us to the club. That'll never change.

Sadly i hope this is never true but yes match going supporters are not as important to a club like Liverpool as they were, this is the same with all sports these days though to some degree. We are not unique here!

You are right of course, it's part of modern day football.

People hate change, its just natural Football don't revolve around Liverpool or its Fans. Sooner most of you guys understand this the more your enjoy football than find a reason to moan about how fast it has changed.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez admitted after the match that the manner of his side's victory had stunned him and he stated: "My problem is that I don't have words to express the things that I feel at this moment"

Which planet are you living on? I accept change as long as it's for the better. Some good things have happened over the years but the treatment of "supporters" is not one of them, not considering the money in the game. You accept your "change" and watch the working man priced out of the game. If football doesn't revolve around Liverpool and it's fans, what are you doing here? Why do we follow our team?
