Three defenders on the bench is needed, for when Villa empty their bench.

Wasn't that sandwiched between Liverpool 4-0 Madrid and Manchester Utd 1-4 Liverpool?
No, the Manc game was between the Madrid and Villa one. Villa were a good team then too.
Football without fans is nothing.

We've won 18 titles, 5 European Cups, 7 FA Cups, but today must be the greatest victory of all.

Downing at LB v 3-5-2 gives me some concern but I expect the managers right in his choice.

Our front three will stretch their back three, though, so the wingbacks will have to play a bit deeper for them, especially as Johnson will be getting forward a lot. Downing will probably find himself with more space than usual, and doing more covering for Agger against the Villa front 2. It's going to be interesting to see how the game goes. On paper, they are essentially going to have to play a back 5 against our 3+Johnson+Gerrard breaking, so they will be very reliant on the counter attack. If we keep the ball well in the mid and attacking thirds like we usually do, those counter-attacks might be minimal. The danger for us is that they plug up so much of the final third that we will be relying on a Johnson long shot or Suarez being in the mood for goals today.
Better looking than Samie.

Ashley Westwood for these looks a very good player. They signed him from Crewe, which was a bit of a shock because although he was highly rated nobody really expected him to move to the Premiership, let alone play so regularly, but he has made the step up really well. He's a bit in the Joe Allen mould actually.

The danger for us is that they plug up so much of the final third that we will be relying on a Johnson long shot or Suarez being in the mood for goals today.

This would probably be the biggest threat they can pose, hit us on a break early then anchor ship. 5 in midfield with 3 behind would make attacks against them in the box very difficult unless we use our midfield to draw out and slip someone through on goal. Its essential we need to get an early goal as I can see Villa being more than happy to park bus from the word go.

Does mate. We broke quite a few standards these past 3 seasons. People say - oh well, it's only a record.

What they don't understand is that those aren't "just records"- they are STANDARDS that were set in place and the more records you break, the more standards slip- the more the next batch of players or the next manager get some "leeway".

Worst start for a season is now not a biggie, since we now have some sort of "leeway" to not have a worse start than this season, for instance. One more point to the start of the season, would be seen as "improvement" next season(IF we get off to a "shaky" start again). No more records to be broken please. Well, I'd take positive ones.

A lot of teams do that and we never seem to have a go at them. Get people who aren't afraid to take on defenders. We got Sterling on one flank, should have had someone like Assaidi on the other.

Villa were a good team then too.

They were woeful that day, tactical wise. They flooded forward at every opportunity and got picked off at will on the counter attack. It was like taking sweets from a kid for a team so well drilled as ours was in 08/09.

Interesting that O'Neill went completely the opposite way the following season and won the game.
