Rise Up Anfield! Community Bakery NOW UP AND RUNNING
« on: December 3, 2012, 04:10:37 pm »

Regular match goers and Anfield natives will have noticed a change at the old Mitchell's Bakery on Oakfield Road. Homebaked Anfield have taken over the premises and are planning to create a community owned bakery in the heart of the community that supports our Club.

They have a problem. They don't have an oven.

A fund raising drive is under way, using the Kickstarter website to generate the £13,000 needed to buy a new oven for the premises. Over £2500 has been raised in a very short space of time. There are also some interesting options available to more wealthy donors, including the naming of a loaf.

Here at RAWK Towers we're keen to help Homebaked Anfield achieve their ambitions, and we are requesting the support of RAWKites all over the world to help them with their ambitions this Christmas. We think it would be great if we could raise £1000 through the site, and get a "Red & White Kob" loaf on the shelves for the beginning of next season.

You can support our efforts by donating to RAWK in the usual manner, and then either notifying us of your support in this thread, or shy donors can PM me here on the site and let me know the value of their donation*.

One hundred RAWKites donating just £10 can make this happen, and in turn give something back to the community that gave us our Club.

What else can you do? You can spread the word by following/liking the project on Facebook and on Twitter.

When you go to the game, go to the bakery - they are open and are trading and they have had a great response at the last home game - make sure you check them out the next time you're at the game or in the area.

* Just to be clear, if we don't make the £1000, we will be donating whatever we raise to the project.

I've donated my tenner to get the Red & White Kob Project under way - are there 99 more RAWKites out there who can help Anfield to Rise Up?

Homebaked Anfield will be featured on the BBC One Show tonight at 7pm! :wave

This button works:

But there is an error message on the return page. This does not affect the payment which still goes through paypal. It looks terrible, and is being looked at, but it should not prevent donation.

In case anyone else was wondering (like me) what a 'community' bakery is, the link in the OP has some more info on the scheme:

Quote
Over the last 2 and half years, artist Jeanne van Heeswijk, commissioned by Liverpool Biennial, has been working with people from Anfield and Breckfield to rethink the future of their neighbourhood.

2Up 2Down provides a way for local people to “take matters into their own hands” and make real social and physical change in their neighbourhood. Local people of all ages are collaborating in the development of the project, volunteering their time and energy, and committing to play an active part in the long term.

Architects URBED and other design specialists have worked with the community to re-model a block of empty property including the former Mitchell’s Bakery and the two terraced houses next door. Taking the whole community as their “client”, they have designed an affordable housing scheme, bakery shop and kitchen, meeting and project spaces, with the needs of real individuals in mind.  The scheme presents a positive alternative to the demolitions and clearances of recent years.

At the same time, the group have set up Homebaked Community Land Trust  – a co-operative organisation with its roots in the garden city movement – to enable the collective community ownership of the properties, and a co-operative business to reopen the Bakery as a social enterprise.

What happened to the old oven? Good to see there's an offer of a limited edition artwork - I hope it's realistic.

Forgive me for saying this, but where in their business plan did it say 'Get oven charitably'? Yes, I've got a cob on.

I think we should be clear, they are using kickstarter to raise the funds and although you probably need to believe in the cause they are not looking for charitable donations, they are offering something in return for all the donations.  In the case of the £1000 we are hoping to raise we get a loaf named in our honour.
